JOB SUMMARY:

Identifies specific student delays or deficits in the development process, assesses physical limitations and provides intervention programs to establish the foundation essential to the learning process.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Additional duties may be assigned.

  1. Evaluates students for physical limitations, developmental delays, sensory-motor dysfunction, perceptual-motor abilities, self-help skills, functional daily living skills and adaptive equipment needs; and develops and administers educational programs based on evaluation results.
  2. Interprets test and diagnostic findings to parents, teachers, students, and other entitled parties.
  3. Provides training for educational staff and supervises programs conducted by educational staff.
  4. Recommends or fabricates adaptive equipment for ADL (Activities of Daily Living) needs, for communication, and for individualized classroom setting.
  5. Monitors utilization of prosthetics, orthotics and adaptive appliances.
  6. Provides home programs for parents/guardians when appropriate.
  7. Participates in district and/or special education meetings as appropriate.
  8. Participates in continuing education and professional conferences and workshops to keep abreast of current treatment methods and to disseminate information to other disciplines.
  9. Maintains student records; prepares end-of-the-year reports on student performance; prepares other reports as requested.
  10. Maintains confidentiality of all student records.
  11. Maintains inventory of materials and supplies; submits requisitions as needed.
  12. Participates in staffing, building meetings, parent programs and conferences; maintains professional relationships with students, colleagues, parents, and the general public.
  13. Supervises and evaluates occupational (COTA) and physical (PTA) therapy assistants and students.
  14. Provides consultation to teachers, assistants and aides regarding individualized handling and positioning techniques, adaptive equipment, materials and programs as needed.
  15. Serves on committees as necessary to support therapy services.
  16. Attends IEP and other student conferences when possible and develops individualized goals and objectives for assigned students.
  17. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  18. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and policy and procedure manuals.
  19. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  20. Ability to speak effectively one-on-one and before groups.
  21. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, decimals and percentages.
  22. While performing the duties and responsibilities of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear, stand, walk, sit, and use hands and arms to handle, feel, and reach and is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, and move up to 50 pounds.

QUILIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Occupational/Physical Therapy required (Master’s degree preferred).
  2. Experience in pediatrics/school-based occupational/physical therapy preferred.
  3. Missouri Occupational or Physical Therapy License required for position as appropriate.
  4. Maintain continuing education units as required in existing state standards for licensing.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS:

  1. Ability to communicate, both verbally and in writing, and interact effectively with all aspects of the school community is required.
  2. Ability to solve conflicts, maintain confidentiality and remain open to various ideas and viewpoints.

MATHMATICAL SKILLS:

  1. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations using whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and percentages.
  2. Ability to perform mathematical calculations to balance assigned budget items, invoices, bills, purchase orders and other related items.

REASONING ABILITY:

  1. Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines while complying with established policies and procedures of the building and district.
  2. Identifies and resolve problems in a timely manner, gathers and analyzes information skillfully; uses reason even when dealing with emotional topics.
  3. Ability to concentrate, think, read and learn is necessary to perform the essential job duties.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  1. Demonstrate organizational ability and attention to detail.
  2. Ability to provide assistance to the school community as necessary.
  3. Ability to work independently.
  4. Excellent human relation skills.
  5. Knowledge of office equipment (computers, copiers, fax machine, and related items).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must regularly sit, talk, listen, and respond. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use repetitive wrist, hand and/or finger movement; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand and walk. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, precise hand-eye coordination and the ability to identify and distinguish colors. Occasionally, the employee may lift up to 50 pounds, such as, to lift files, papers, and equipment. The foregoing is not an exclusive list and the employee may be required to exceed the minimum physical demand specifications should the safety and security of students and staff be compromised.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential duties of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually at a moderate level with frequent interruptions. The employee continuously interacts with staff and the public.
