Classification: Part-Time, Hourly, Non-Exempt ($18/hr)

Location: Multiple sites (including 211 Minor St, Red Bank Middle, Red Bank High, Soddy Daisy Middle, & Sale Creek Middle High)

Supervises: N/A

Schedule: 15–18 hours/week. Typically Monday–Thursday, 1:00 PM–5:00 PM. Follows the Hamilton County Schools calendar (summers and school holidays off). Daily school assignments vary; occasional Fridays or extended hours may be required for training or events.

Through our Community School model, our Coordinators partner with school leadership to provide wrap-around supports tailored to each school’s unique needs. Our after-school programming is a vital part of this approach, offering a safe, enriching space for students to build relationships, explore new interests, and access vital resources.

Position Summary

The Multi-Site After School Program Assistant provides flexible, coverage-based support for NNH after-school programs across multiple Hamilton County school sites. The primary responsibility of this role is to serve as a substitute for after-school staff, ensuring continuity of student supervision, enrichment activities, and a safe, structured environment when regular staff are unavailable. When not assigned to coverage, the Assistant may provide general support for Community School related activities as directed by the Chief Education Officer. Assignments vary depending on staffing needs and program priorities, requiring adaptability and a willingness to assist where needed. This role performs the essential duties of the Community School Program Assistant on an as-needed, multi-site basis.

Essential Job ResponsibilitiesProgram Coverage & Student Supervision

  • Serve as a substitute Program Assistant at multiple sites, supporting ASP Managers and/or Coordinators to maintain safe, structured, and positive environments.
  • Assist with daily program logistics and student transitions, including check-ins, snack distribution, and dismissal procedures.
  • Provide active supervision, mentorship, and engagement during academic support and enrichment activities.
  • Build positive relationships with middle and high school students, encouraging active participation and a sense of belonging.
  • Adapt quickly to different site environments, staff directions, and student groups to ensure seamless program continuity.

Communication & Behavior Management

  • Follow established program routines and consistently reinforce behavioral expectations.
  • Utilise basic behavior redirection and de-escalation strategies to maintain classroom safety.
  • Support communication with site staff regarding student needs, incidents, or program updates to ensure continuity of care.
  • Promptly notify Community School Coordinators and management of any operational or behavioral issues during substitution.
  • Maintain strict ethical standards, confidentiality, and professional boundaries with students at all times.

Other

  • Support the Community School team with a range of computer-based, administrative, and logistical tasks when not providing site coverage.
  • Participate in staff debriefs, team meetings, and professional development opportunities.

  • Perform other duties as deemed necessary by the supervisor and/or Chief Executive Officer.

Job Requirements & QualificationsEducation & Experience

  • Associate’s degree or comparable experience required.
  • Direct experience working with middle- and/or high-school aged youth required.
  • Experience in nonprofit youth programs, after-school settings, or related educational fields preferred.
  • Proven knowledge of youth behavior management and conflict resolution strategies preferred.

Skills & Abilities

  • Highly flexible and comfortable adapting to varying school environments, schedules, and team dynamics on short notice.
  • Ability to safely and effectively supervise student groups, self-regulate, and maintain a calm demeanor during high-stress behavioral situations.
  • Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills with both youth and adults.
  • Reliable transportation and a valid driver's license are required for frequent local travel between assigned school sites and the NNH main office.
  • Proficiency with computers sufficient to use Google Suite, web-based timekeeping, and learning management software.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs and fully participate in physically engaging student activities, including sports, fitness programs, and outdoor excursions.
