Job Functions
Patient Care :
- Supervises assesses, diagnoses, and treats surgical patients according to the scope of practice outlined by the Board of Nursing/ Physician Assistants, approved protocols, and national standards of practice as directed by the physician preceptor.
- Remains on call and works night, evening, weekend, and holiday rotation as business needs dictate.
- Functions similarly to a physician in their assigned area in the absence of such profssional.
- Oversees complex and simple wound closure. Wound vac management: application and removal and appropriate ordering of devices
- Supervise the viewing and interpretation of X-rays, CT scans, MRIs, and lab results.
- First and second assist in OR.
- Oversight of pre-op antibiotic protocol and work towards no fall outs with dosing.
- Collobrate with surgeons and materials management to operate OR in cost effective and budget friendly manner
- Collaborate with OR head nurse to help promote OR efficiency.
- Collaborate with nursing staff and leadership to ensure timely and safe patient care of surgery patients.
- Work to develop inpatient post-op order sets and nursing protocols for the following:
- Ambulation
- CAUDI prevention
- CLABSI prevention
- Incentive spirometry use
- Post-op pain control
- Decrease length of stay
- Decrease readmission rate
- Work on hypertonic saline protocols
- Clinic visits for seeing post op follow-ups, ER follow-ups, and new patient referrals
- Work with outpatient surgery administration to ensure:
- Timely patient follow up
- Accuracy of physician time off/call schedule
- ED referral accuracy Patient Education:
- Provides patients and/or family members with education related to the disease process, health, and wellness
- Performs pre and post op rounds
- Oversees writing of progress notes and discharge summaries
- Serves as a resource for community agencies as appropriate Documentation:
- Ensures timely and accurate documentation of patient status and patient care activities including treatments, procedures, and medications prescribed
- Supervises viewing and interpreting xrays, CT scans, and MRIs
- Ordering and interpreting labs Continuing Education:
- Ensure clinical competence of staff through ongoing education and training.
- Stay informed about changes in medical management and disseminate information to the team.
- Encourage participation in healthcare education activities
- Supervise all Surgical PA/NP employees in assigned hospital.
- Monitor and evaluate the performance of team members, providing regular feedback and coaching.
- Manage staffing levels, scheduling, and workload distribution to ensure efficient operation.
- Oversee payroll issues and timecard approval.
- Responsbile for insuring all staff having update licensure and certifications.?
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and performance improvement projects.
- Address and resolve any staff conflicts or issues.
- Memeber of APP Council.
- Facilitate new surgeon inpatient orientation/onboarding.
- Collaborate with recruitment to establish a streamline surgeon hospital tour.
- Maintain Surgery data management
- Continue to spearhead the Quarterly Surgery Service line meeting
- Adheres to NMHS/NMMC Policies/Procedures/Guidelines
- Supervise compliance with local, state, and federal policies, procedures, guidelines, regulations, and laws.
- Update staff on changes in surgical protocols and regulations.
Education
- Master's Degree Nursing. Required
- AANP - American Association Of Nurse Practitioners
- PA - Physician Assistant
- CRNFA - Certified Registered Nurse First Assistant
- 1-3 years. Minimum of 3 years clinical experience as an RN. Required
- 1-3 years. Minimum of 3 years clinical experience as an PA. Required
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Excellent written and verbal communication

- Interaction with a patient population of all ages ranging from neonates to geriatrics
- Responsible for assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients in the clinic setting
