Required to be on-call 24 hours per day, 365 days per year and available to work off hours, weekends and extended hours during major events as required to support Rail Transportation operational needs.

Roles And Responsibilities
- Directs the activities of (Senior) Road Foremen and, indirectly, Engine Service employees in all phases of train operations in conformance with NJ Transit, FRA and NORAC rules and regulations to ensure the safe, on time and efficient movement of trains.
- Coordinates and manages the activities surrounding the federally mandated Engineer Certification program, which must be completed by Senior Road Foremen, as well as reviewing results.
- Provides guidance and interpretation of operating rules, safety rules, air brake rules, electrical operating instructions, FRA rules and regulations, and NJ Transit policies to Senior Road Foremen and Engine Service employees.
- Monitors the performance of Engine Service employees by riding trains and making observations, as well as reviewing observations made by Senior Road Foremen.
- Responds to service disruptions and unusual problems to ensure that passengers and employees are safely transported, and all appropriate safety and operating procedures are followed. Investigates and reports on the causes of an incident, where appropriate. Redirects train crews and equipment as needed to ensure the continuation of passenger service.
- Ensures that all Engine Service employees are properly qualified to operate trains in each territory. Monitors Engine Service employees for absenteeism, assignments, as well as the status of the extra list to ensure that maximum utilization of personnel is attained.
- High School diploma or equivalent, and nine (9) years of progressive experience in railroad operations, to include passenger service as a qualified locomotive engineer and supervisory experience.
- Formal post high school education desirable.
- Formal post high school education may be applied toward some of the years of required experience as appropriate.
- In-depth knowledge of railroad operations, including, but not limited to, FRA regulations and requirements for the operation and movement of trains, maintenance of way, transportation and mechanical required.
- Must be proficient in reading and interpreting regulations, and procedures.
- Must have good verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to manage emergency situations as well as make independent judgements using sound reasoning and knowledge.
