Senior Road Foreman, Engines

Summary: The Senior Road Foreman Engines is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the maintenance and repair of locomotives and other railroad engines. They supervise a team of engine mechanics and technicians, ensuring that all engines are in proper working condition and meet safety standards. They develop maintenance plans, schedule repairs, and monitor the progress of engine maintenance activities.

The Senior Road Foreman Engines also provide technical expertise and guidance to their team,

troubleshoot engine problems, and implement corrective actions. They collaborate with other

departments and stakeholders to ensure efficient and reliable engine operations on the railroad.

Roles and Responsibilities:

• Manages the supervision of Engineers and Assistant Engineers in all phases of train operations in conformance with NJ Transit, FRA and NORAC rules and regulations to ensure the safe, on time and efficient movement of trains.
• Monitors crew schedules and equipment cycles and ensures their efficient and timely implementation. Reacts and responds to any disruptions of service which would require standing for prolong periods of time. Also, modifying, and rearranging crew and equipment cycles as they affect posted schedules.
• Monitors daily operations on assigned line to ensure safe, reliable on time service, and makes operating adjustments as needed.
• Manages the qualification of Engineers and Assistant Engineers on all equipment, air brakes, physical characteristics, proper train handling, and operating rule compliance, and monitors their performance by riding trains, observing and instructing.
• Manages the conducting of locomotive inspections from an operational standpoint to ensure they are in safe operating condition.
• Investigates accidents and unusual occurrences documenting same to determine cause and take corrective action if applicable to prevent similar incidence.
• Consistently observes, corrects and trains subordinates to ensure compliance with safety rules, policies and procedures. Monitors work environment for cleanliness and safety hazards and takes corrective action.

This Position Supervises:

• Locomotive Engineers

Education, Experience and Qualifications:

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Seven (7) years of progressive experience in railroad operations, to include passenger service as a qualified locomotive engineer and experience in a supervisory or lead role.

Knowledge and Skills:

• In-depth knowledge of railroad operations, including, but not limited to, FRA regulations and requirements for the operation and movement of trains, maintenance of way, transportation and mechanical required.
• Must be proficient in reading and interpreting regulations, and procedures.
• Must have good verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to manage emergency situations as well as make independent judgements using sound reasoning and knowledge.
• An associate degree in Transportation, Business Administration, or Public Administration from a US Department of Education accredited college or university can be substituted for two (2) years of required experience.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations, Working Environment:

• Frequent exposure to loud noise (>100dbs.), fumes and vibrations.

Physical Demands/Other Conditions:

• Occasional lifting of equipment and materials weighing up to 50lbs. (pry bars, track jacks).
• Frequent pushing and pulling with both hands to connect and disconnect rail cars, open train doors and platforms (40lbs pressure) during inspections.
• Frequently walking over rough and uneven terrain at slow pace up to 800m
• Frequent exposure to loud noise (>100dbs.), fumes and vibrations.
• Required to be on call 24 hours per day, 365 days per year and available to work off hours, weekends and extended hours during major events as required to support Rail Transportation operational needs.
