Technical Lead – Headless Shopify Commerce Engineering

Role Overview

Lead the architecture and delivery of modern, headless commerce solutions built on Shopify Plus. This role spans discovery, solution design, hands‑on engineering, and launch execution. You’ll guide teams through technical decision‑making, integration patterns, and frontend/backend implementation using Shopify’s headless toolset and modern JavaScript frameworks.

Key Responsibilities

• Direct the full lifecycle of headless Shopify Plus initiatives — from early architectural planning through implementation, testing, and production rollout
• Collaborate with product, UX, strategy, and delivery teams to define the technical approach for decoupled Shopify architectures, including data flows, integration models, and performance considerations
• Build custom storefronts using Shopify’s Hydrogen framework (Remix‑based), React, and TypeScript, applying modern composable commerce patterns
• Design, extend, and optimize GraphQL‑driven integrations using Shopify’s Storefront API and Admin API to support scalable, high‑performance commerce experiences
• Translate business requirements into technical designs that emphasize modularity, maintainability, and long‑term extensibility
• Produce architectural documentation, integration specifications, and system diagrams for headless storefronts and supporting services
• Provide technical leadership across engineering teams, ensuring alignment with best practices in frontend engineering, API design, and cloud‑native development

Requirements

Shopify & Headless Architecture

• Hands‑on experience delivering headless Shopify Plus solutions
• Deep familiarity with Hydrogen (Remix‑based) and custom headless storefront development
• Strong understanding of Shopify’s Storefront and Admin GraphQL APIs
• Experience designing GraphQL‑first data models and orchestrating API interactions

Frontend Engineering

• Advanced proficiency in React and TypeScript
• Strong grasp of SSR, streaming, caching, and performance optimization for commerce applications
• Experience building scalable component libraries and frontend architectures

Backend & Integrations

• Experience building custom Shopify apps or backend services (Node.js preferred)
• Background integrating Shopify with enterprise systems such as ERP, OMS, WMS, PIM, CMS, or third‑party SaaS platforms
• Familiarity with authentication patterns, webhook processing, background jobs, and event‑driven workflows

Commerce Platform Expertise

• Understanding of Shopify’s core commerce concepts: catalog structure, variants, pricing, promotions, inventory, orders, and fulfillment
• Experience with multi‑store or multi‑region Shopify configurations
• Familiarity with data migration, synchronization, and cross‑platform data governance

Preferred Qualifications

• 5 years in ecommerce or digital product engineering
• Experience migrating monolithic or legacy commerce systems into a headless Shopify architecture
• Exposure to modern React frameworks (Remix‑style, Next‑style, or similar)
• Understanding of MACH‑aligned principles and composable commerce ecosystems
• Ability to evaluate emerging commerce technologies and guide adoption
• Strong collaboration skills with product, UX, and architecture teams
