What are the responsibilities and job description for the Academic Specialist position at New England Center for Children Inc?
The Academic Specialist is responsible for one classroom in which students from several teams attend.
General Responsibilities:
- Modify or develop curriculum for a range of grade levels in areas of:
- English Language Arts and Mathematics (all students)
- Science and Technology, History and Social Science (full-time students)
- Provide direct instruction in curriculum content to students with a range of academic skills
- The class size will be limited to 12 students; the total caseload will be approximately 20 students.
- Plan and implement group lessons for full-time students
- Serve as a consultant about academic programming for students who do not attend academic classrooms
- Supervise and train team teachers to implement programming
- Administer criterion referenced (e.g NECC Skills Assessment) and standardized tests to determine grade level and appropriate instruction
- Complete academic sections of the NECC Assessment Meeting form
- Write current performance level of Academic domain of students’ Individual Education Plans and propose objectives
- Administer MCAS and MCAS-Alternate testing to caseload students as per DESE and NECC guidelines
- Monitor student progress data on objectives and attend assessment and IEP team meetings for caseload students
Education/Experience:
- Master’s degree in special education
- Massachusetts Certification and Licensure in Moderate or Severe Special Needs is required (professional licensure a plus)
- Experience with the Massachusetts’ General Curriculum
- Two or more years’ experience in a supervisory position as a licensed teacher is required
- Four or more years of experience working with children with autism, behavior disorders, learning disabilities, or mental retardation
- Experience in modifying published curriculum to meet the individual needs of students
- Experience in writing IEPs, Progress Reports, and Re-Evaluation Assessments
- Experience in administering standardized tests to determine grade level
- Experience with MCAS-Alternate Assessment
