Our in-house tax controversy team handles complex federal and state tax disputes for sophisticated clients nationwide. We are hiring a Senior Tax Controversy Attorney to help lead the practice and manage our most complex matters.

The Role

This is a senior attorney position for someone who has spent their career handling serious federal and state tax disputes — not reviewing returns and not focused on planning — but litigating and resolving high-stakes controversies for sophisticated clients.

You will manage complex matters independently, interface directly with high-net-worth individuals and business owners, and work alongside a credentialed in-house team that includes former IRS senior examiners, appeals officers, and Big 4 practitioners.

Many matters involve multi-million-dollar disputes and sophisticated technical issues. Clients include high-net-worth individuals, closely held businesses, family offices, and professional firms.

What You'll Do

• Lead and manage federal and state tax controversy matters from initial notice through administrative resolution or litigation
• Represent clients before the IRS, state taxing authorities, U.S. Tax Court, federal district courts, and appellate forums
• Handle audits, appeals, deficiency disputes, collections litigation, penalty abatement matters, and Offers in Compromise
• Draft motions, briefs, petitions, protest letters, and settlement memoranda
• Develop case strategy, conduct evidentiary analysis, and coordinate expert witnesses where needed
• Advise clients directly on risk exposure, dispute resolution options, and litigation vs. settlement trade-offs
• Collaborate with NJA's tax planning, estate, and wealth management teams on matters that intersect with broader client strategy
• Mentor and supervise junior controversy staff
• Take ownership of the firm's most complex controversy matters and serve as a senior technical resource within the tax group
• Participate in client relationship development as the practice continues to grow

What We're Looking For

• J.D. from an accredited law school required; LL.M. in Taxation strongly preferred
• 15 years of substantive tax controversy experience, with meaningful time at a major law firm, Big 4, or equivalent high-caliber practice
• Demonstrated experience managing complex IRS examinations, appeals, and federal tax litigation involving significant disputes
• Trial or evidentiary hearing experience preferred
• Admission to at least one U.S. state bar required
• New York or California bar admission preferred, Florida a plus
• U.S. Tax Court admission strongly preferred
• Deep working knowledge of the Internal Revenue Code, Treasury Regulations, and federal tax procedure
• Strong legal writing, analytical, and advocacy skills
• Comfortable operating as a trusted advisor to high-net-worth individuals and sophisticated business clients
• Portable book of business welcome but not required
