POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Ned Smith Center seeks an enthusiastic and friendly person to greet visitors to our upstairs Galleries and Gift Shop during all open hours, Tuesday - Saturday, 10AM - 4PM and to serve as the first point of contact for our members.
Essential responsibilities include:
- Coordinating the Ned Smith Center’s membership program, including sending renewal notices, entering new and renewing memberships and processing payments, sending out member cards, implementing member retention efforts, and fulfilling member benefits
- Working with other staff and board members to plan and implement special member events and reevaluate membership benefits each year
- Opening and closing the Gift Shop each day and opening and closing the Galleries on Saturdays, ensuring security procedures are followed
- Greeting visitors and answering questions about gift shop items, gallery exhibits, programs and events, and trail usage; referring visitors to other staff as needed
- Caring for the Gift Shop and Galleries to ensure the safety and comfort of patrons, the security of art exhibits, and the smooth operation of the Gift Shop, including assisting Gift Shop volunteers as needed
- Processing Gift Shop and event ticket sales
- Assisting the Operations Manager and Archivist/Exhibitions Curator with administrative tasks as requested
While previous knowledge of the Ned Smith Center and our programs is a plus, it is not required. This position will receive necessary training from Center staff to gain familiarity with the Center and our programs. A willingness to learn about our mission and programs and to positively represent the Center to the public is required. The Membership and Visitor Services Coordinator must be comfortable working alone at times and being the only staff member present at the Center on most Saturdays. The ability to work at least three Saturdays per month from 10am to 4pm is a must.
This position reports directly to the Operations Manager but also consults with the Archivist / Exhibitions Curator for matters related to the Galleries or Exhibitions.
QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate will have:
- A high school diploma
- Two years of customer service experience
- Experience learning and using computer software such as Microsoft and Google suite programs
- The ability and willingness to work cooperatively with a small staff

LOCATION
The Ned Smith Center is located in historic Millersburg, Pennsylvania, 30 miles north of Harrisburg. Center lands include 535 wooded acres featuring nine miles of hiking trails, an open-air amphitheater, a substantial pedestrian bridge over the Wiconisco Creek, a picnic area, a children’s discovery play area, and pollinator gardens. Our facility houses three gallery spaces, a gift shop, administrative offices, an education room, and an observational bee hive. Employees generally work on-site at the Center and at locations in the surrounding area as needed for events and educational programs.
