Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The School of Education oversees the university’s educator preparation program (EPP). The EPP is multifaceted and provides many services and programming in the area of teacher education. The overarching goal of the School of Education is to prepare students for careers in education.

Primary Purpose of Position

The primary purpose of the Academic Success Coordinator is to support students with intellectual and developmental disabilities in achieving meaningful academic progress within the postsecondary environment by providing individualized coaching, instructional coordination, and progress monitoring. This position works closely with students, faculty, and program staff to align academic expectations with student strengths and learning needs, facilitate access to inclusive coursework and learning support, and promote the development of academic skills, self-advocacy, and independence. Through ongoing collaboration and data informed support, the Academic Success Coordinator ensures that academic experiences contribute directly to students’ overall success, credential attainment, and post-program outcomes

Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Demonstrated commitment to working and serving students with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families.
  • Relevant experience working in engagement, coordination, community partnerships, or student services in higher education or nonprofit/community settings. Experience working with diverse populations.
  • Ability to provide person-centered academic coaching that supports diverse learning needs and promotes student independence in a postsecondary environment.
  • Ability to collaborate with faculty and instructional staff to facilitate inclusive learning experiences while maintaining academic integrity.
  • Ability to plan, monitor, and document student academic progress using data-informed and goal-driven practices.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and collaborate with students, families, faculty, and multidisciplinary program staff.

Minimum Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education, Social Work, Rehabilitation Counseling or related field
  • Demonstrated commitment to working and serving students with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families.
  • Relevant experience working in engagement, coordination, community partnerships, or student services in higher education or nonprofit/community settings. Experience working with diverse populations.
  • Master’s preferred

Primary Responsibilities And Duties

Function Communication (Presentations, Oral, and Written) Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.

  • Consult with faculty to support inclusive instructional strategies and appropriate course adaptations.
  • Assist in modifying instructional materials, assignments, and assessments in alignment with student goals.
  • Coordinate supplemental instruction, tutoring, or study supports as needed.
  • Help bridge communication between students and faculty regarding academic expectations.

Function Coaching/Mentoring Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.

  • Provide one-on-one and small-group academic coaching to students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).
  • Support students with study skills, organization, time management, and assignment completion.
  • Encourage development of self-advocacy skills related to academic needs and learning preferences.
  • Adjust levels of support over time to promote increasing academic independence.

Function Program Monitoring and Administration Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.

  • Support development and implementation of individualized academic goals within student success or learning plans.
  • Monitor academic performance and engagement in coursework and program classes.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of student progress, outcomes, and support strategies.
  • Contribute data and narrative summaries for internal reporting, accreditation, or funding requirements.

Function Communication and Interpersonal Skills Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.

  • Communicate regularly with students regarding academic progress and expectations.
  • Collaborate with other IPSE staff (e.g., employment specialists, campus/community coordinators) to align academic and non-academic supports.
  • Participate in team meetings, case reviews, and program planning activities.
  • Uphold confidentiality, ethical standards, and inclusive communication practices.
