Description Of Work

Broughton Hospital is currently accepting applications for two (2) Licensed Sign Language Interpreters, one (1) on 1st Shift and one (1) on 2nd Shift, to work in the Deaf Services Department; specifically, on a co-ed deaf unit. The primary focus of this position is to provide interpreting services for patients who have been diagnosed with a mental illness and/or co-occurring substance use disorders and to hospital staff that support these patients within a multidisciplinary team. The ideal candidate works well with others, works great under pressure, and is extremely flexible with scheduling.

Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To

Interpreting in a variety of situations such as educational, medical, legal, financial, employment, and community meetings

Teaching beginning American Sign Language (ASL) classes

Rendering manually, orally or in writing a deaf person's message

Interpreting, transliterating, and signing to voice interpreting

Assessing the communication skills level of clients and exercising judgment in determining the services to be provide

Knowledge Skills And Abilities/Management Preferences

Recruitment Range: $52,592.00 - $92,036.00

The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:

  • NC Interpreter and Transliterator License

Management Prefers Candidates With The Following

  • Experience providing sign language interpreting services in a mental health setting.

Conditional Requirements: Selected applicants must be able to pass a State Bureau of Investigation Criminal History Check, and complete and pass BLS/CPR training and Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training during orientation.

This Position Is Designated As Mandatory And Must Report Or Stay Over During Adverse Weather Events.

We Will Be Recruiting For Multiple Positions With This Post. Your Application Will Be Considered For All Noted Open Positions.

The normal work schedule is Monday through Friday. On-Call coverage is required for weekends and holidays on a rotating schedule amongst a team of four (4) Sign Language Interpreters. Flexibility is required on a daily basis to meet patient needs.

About The Facility

Broughton Hospital is one of the three regional psychiatric hospitals with statutory responsibility for operating as part of the Division of State Operated Healthcare Facilities (DSOHF). With the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, we provide help and support to North Carolinians, and their families, experiencing mental illness. Our hospital serves the western thirty-seven (37) counties of North Carolina, as part of the state's system of care and treatment for persons with mental illness.

Veteran’s and National Guard Preference

Minimum Education And Experience

Bachelor’s degree in an interpreter training program from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of professional interpreting experience in a community, business, or government program; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualification If applicable as defined by GS 90D, meets the requirements for licensure as determined by the North Carolina Interpreter and Transliterator Licensing Board.
