Job Overview

We are seeking a dynamic, dedicated, and passionate Freelance American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter to facilitate clear, accurate, and culturally competent communication between deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals and English-speaking audiences. This role offers flexible, remote opportunities to interpret in diverse settings, including educational, medical, legal, and community environments. As a Freelance ASL Interpreter, you will leverage your linguistic expertise and cultural awareness to bridge communication gaps, ensuring accessibility and understanding for all parties involved. Your professionalism and commitment to ethical standards will be vital in delivering high-quality interpretation services that empower individuals and foster inclusive interactions. This is not a contracted position. You will be hired as an employee and paid as an employee, not with a 1099. We do cover most of the Kansas area so you must have a valid driver's license and your own dependable transportion. Due to the content of our work, you must be at least 21 years of age. We provide services via face-to-face interpreting as well as video interpreting. KQAS, NIC or BEI certification is preferred, but not required; however, you must be fluent in ASL, working toward your certification, and registered with KCDHH.

Responsibilities

• Provide real-time interpretation of spoken English into American Sign Language (ASL) and vice versa across various settings such as educational sessions, medical appointments, legal proceedings, and community events.
• Perform simultaneous interpretation during live events or meetings to ensure seamless communication flow without delays.
• Demonstrate cultural competency by understanding and respecting the cultural nuances of ASL users and other language communities.
• Maintain strict adherence to professional ethics, confidentiality agreements, and interpreter standards set by relevant certifying bodies.
• Collaborate with clients to understand specific interpretation needs and adapt accordingly to ensure clarity and accuracy in all interactions.

Qualifications

• Proven proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) with certification from recognized interpreter training programs or certifying bodies.
• Strong command of English language skills, including advanced interpretation, translation, and linguistic capabilities.
• Deep understanding of professional ethics related to confidentiality, impartiality, and respectful communication.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to convey messages clearly and effectively across different modalities.
• Demonstrated cultural competency in working with diverse populations within educational, medical, legal, or community settings.

Pay: $25.00 - $35.00 per hour
