Description Of Work
This position offers a unique opportunity to serve as the Juvenile Prosecutor for the 15th Prosecutorial District.

SALARY RANGE:
$75, $85,000.00

Responsibilities
As the Juvenile Prosecutor, you'll be a vital partner in balancing the pursuit of justice for victims with the dynamics of prosecuting juvenile offenders. As such, you'll collaborate regularly with law enforcement and the Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ). Key responsibilities include:

  • Legal Consultation: Provide expert legal advice and technical assistance to law enforcement in the investigation of offenses committed by juveniles committed across the 15th Prosecutorial District.
  • Case Prosecution & Litigation: Serve as lead counsel, prepare and present cases in court, and represent the State of North Carolina in juvenile cases across the 15th Prosecutorial District.
  • Pre-Adjudication Support: Support pre-adjudication investigations, including evidence gathering and strategic case development
  • Collaborate and Connect: Build strong relationships with key stakeholders, including social workers, medical professionals, mental health professionals, local juvenile attorneys, and other juvenile justice professionals.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities / Competencies
Knowledge of:
North Carolina statutes, common law, and case law; judicial procedures and rules of evidence; case, statutory, and common law; legal research methods, techniques, sources, databases, and other research tools; the operations of the NC court system; and ethical and professional standards of conduct.

Skill in:
interpreting and applying criminal laws to information, evidence, and other data; using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of case facts; researching and identifying precedents in case law; utilizing electronic legal research and online systems; organizing work; setting priorities; meeting critical deadlines; and following up on assignments with a minimum of direction.

Ability to:
analyze facts and apply applicable law to those facts; conduct legal research; plan, develop, and execute an effective litigation strategy to achieve desired results; prepare, organize, and conduct witness examinations; deliver opening statements, closing arguments, and evidentiary objections; express complex legal concepts and related facts clearly and concisely; argue clearly, logically, and persuasively; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with attorneys, law enforcement agencies, and other participants in the criminal justice process; recognize and solve problems; produce legal interpretations in quickly and responsively for court officials; write reports, motions, briefs, and other legal documents; deal tactfully with sensitive situations; communicate both orally and in writing; and work independently.

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an ABA-accredited law school and an active North Carolina law license.
  • Knowledge and Experience: Extensive understanding of federal, state, and constitutional law, especially regarding juvenile court cases. Familiarity with the NC General Statutes, rules of evidence, and the NC court system.
  • Technical Legal Skills: Proficiency in legal research, strategic case analysis, and complex adjudication preparation. Skilled in interpreting complex criminal laws and applying them to cases in real time.
  • Communication and Collaboration: Ability to work well with other attorneys, law enforcement, and criminal justice partners. Effective in both oral and written communication and comfortable presenting cases in court.
  • Travel: This position requires frequent travel across the 15th Prosecutorial District to handle Juvenile Court in our three counties, making adaptability and independence essential.
