The City of Norfolk, Maritime Center – Nauticus is seeking to hire a Maritime Center Specialist II - Education. The Maritime Center Specialist performs interactive educational history and science programs including tabletop activities, sharing educational content in formal and informal settings on our campus and around the region to increase the public's knowledge and understanding of maritime themes. This position works with a team to deliver world-class guest services to patrons by maintaining quality guest experiences presenting educational material in a fun and engaging way. A successful candidate will have strong public speaking skills, a desire to engage with people, and the ability to adapt.
Nauticus is a maritime discovery center located along the waterfront in downtown, Norfolk offering a unique form of experiential learning for all ages. Through interactive exhibits and STEM to STERN programming, Nauticus uses the museum, Battleship Wisconsin, sailing center, and Schooner Virginia to tell the story of the maritime environment, industry, and the military.
Department Starting Hourly Wage: $16.00
Essential Functions
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.
Preferred candidate will possess some college coursework in science, history, museum studies, or related field.
Previous experience working in formal or informal education environments.

Work Location: 1 Waterside Drive, Norfolk, VA 23510
Work Hours: Hours will vary seasonally. Spring and Summer hours are 9:45am to 5:15pm Fall and Winter hours are 10am to 4pm. 20 hours per week. Some Holidays, weekdays and weekends are required.
If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

Essential Functions
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
- Conduct public presentations for school groups both on and offsite
- Engage with the museum guests through formal programming and informal interactions
- Collaborate with other educators to assist with program development, creation, and execution
- Assist with promotion and execution of education programs and events
- Present STEM and history programs to diverse audiences, including but not limited to school groups, family groups, special youth groups, teachers, and the public including the set up for programs, events, and activities.
- Perform interactive education program including floor programs, workshops, summer camp and special events
- Assist guests with special needs, questions, or complaints in a courteous and responsible manner
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, officials, and all members of the public
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time, life from ground to above the shoulder, climb, bend, stoop, sit, push, pull, and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity
- Other duties as assigned

- The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education.
