Postdoctoral IRTA Position on Mucosal Immunity and Vaccine Development for Emerging Respiratory Viruses

National Institutes of Health
Hamilton, MT Full Time
POSTED ON 7/29/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 11/26/2026

A postdoctoral position focused on mucosal immune and vaccine responses to respiratory viruses is available in the Mucosal Immunology and Virology Unit, led by Dr. Neeltje van Doremalen. Our group investigates how respiratory viruses interact with the host at mucosal surfaces and how vaccination shapes protective immunity. The successful candidate will join a collaborative team in a state-of-the-art research environment with access to BSL-4 facilities.

About the position

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled researcher to join our team in conducting cutting-edge research on mucosal immune and vaccine responses to respiratory viruses, including coronaviruses and influenza. The successful candidate will employ advanced immunological and virological techniques—such as high-dimensional flow cytometry and spatial profiling—to dissect the mechanisms of immune protection and pathogenesis following viral infection or vaccination. Responsibilities include designing and performing experiments within BSL-2 to BSL-4 containment, collaborating with a multidisciplinary team, and contributing to innovative research projects focused on mucosal immunity and vaccine efficacy.

The candidate will analyze and interpret complex datasets, prepare manuscripts for publication in high-impact journals, and present findings at national and international conferences. Mentorship and training of junior lab members are also integral components of this role. This position offers an outstanding opportunity for a dedicated postdoctoral researcher to advance their expertise in mucosal immunology, vaccinology, and respiratory virus pathogenesis within a dynamic and supportive environment.

What you'll need to apply

Interested applicants should submit the following materials:

  • A cover letter describing your research experience, interests, and how your skills align with the lab’s focus on mucosal immunity and vaccines.
  • A curriculum vitae including a list of publications.
  • Three reference letters, sent directly by the referees to the contact person listed below.

Qualifications

Highly motivated candidates with a strong background in adaptive immunology and vaccinology are encouraged to apply. Expertise in B- and T-cell immunology, antibody responses, and characterization of vaccine-induced immunity is particularly valued. Experience in virology, mucosal immunology, or the use of animal models to study immune mechanisms is considered an advantage. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to conduct independent, rigorous research and possess a solid record of scientific publications. Proficiency in advanced laboratory techniques—including multiparameter flow cytometry, immunoassays, and analysis of complex immunological datasets—is highly desirable. Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work effectively in a collaborative research environment, are essential. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in immunology or a related discipline and have less than two years of postdoctoral experience.
