Our Gridtern Program provides current college students the ability to gain practical experience within the energy industry. Your summer will begin on Monday, June 15, 2026, and will be filled with meaningful work experiences, professional development, networking opportunities, community involvement, and most importantly, have fun!

What You'll Do

Our Digital Substation Standards & Support team is responsible for the capital project delivery of digital substations, the development of IEC 61850-related protection and control standards, and providing support and training for our engineering, operations, and other departments. This team plays a crucial role in advancing the Company's vision of developing intelligent transmission and distribution networks while promoting the adoption of digital infrastructure.

As a Gridtern in the Digital Substation Standards & Support group, you will engage in equipment testing in the laboratory and support the development of IEC 61850 protection and control standards. Your responsibilities will also include computer programming, technical writing, and assisting with various project engineering tasks. This internship will provide you with hands-on experience in digital substations and the opportunity to contribute to innovative projects that enhance the efficiency and reliability of our energy infrastructure.

You will be based in Northboro, MA working in a Hybrid format for the summer. You must reside within a commutable distance to the designated work location during this period.

What You'll Need

  • Availability to start on the program start date, June 15, 2026, and work full-time (40 hours a week) for the duration of the summer
  • Must be registered as a full-time student and continue your education full-time through the Fall 2026 semester
  • Pursuing an Associates, Bachelor’s, or Master’s degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering
  • Have accumulated 18 or more credits and be at least 18 years of age
  • Possess work authorization that does not now or in the future require sponsorship of a visa for employment authorization in the United States (including CPT & OPT)
  • Valid US Driver’s license with a safe driving history that complies with National Grid’s Safe Driver policy.

Salary Range

$23.00 - $33.00 an hour

Candidates will be assessed and provided offers based on major, degree type, and class year. Our Gridtern Program does not offer relocation, housing assistance, or public transportation reimbursement for Gridterns; however, we can provide a list of resources to utilize in making your arrangements.

Please note that as a Gridtern, you must reside within our existing footprint, which includes Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island, and Vermont. You must also reside within a reasonable, commutable distance to your assigned primary office.
