Job Purpose

National Grid is hiring a Lead Integrated Energy Planning (IEP) Analyst in our New England Electric Engineering & Network Strategy department, located in Waltham, MA. This is a hybrid role with approximately 2 days per week in the office. IEP is a coordinated approach to energy system planning that co-optimizes gas and electric network investments with customer electrification adoption throughout Massachusetts. The Lead IEP Analyst is a unique role that provides an opportunity for an experienced or driven early career energy professional to tackle novel challenges and help shape the future of energy networks in support of the Commonwealth’s pursuit of its climate mandates, while ensuring affordable, reliable energy delivery.

The Lead IEP Analyst brings a broad analytical and project management skillset to the National Grid IEP team. This role will join a cross-functional team working across Massachusetts electric and gas distribution companies to define new tools and processes for energy network analysis and planning. The role will report to the Director of Integrated Energy Planning.

Key Accountabilities

  • Lead data discovery and analysis that informs the development of methodologies to enable IEP frameworks,
  • Support internal software acquisition and development teams piloting and/or developing software and digital tools needed to enable integration of gas, electric, and customer system data, and streamline cross-utility data analysis,
  • Manage implementation and continuous improvement of non-pipeline alternatives (NPA) engineering and business processes, including working closely with electric and gas engineers to develop and document analytical processes, owning development and regular updating of electrification load assumptions, and collaborating with other utilities on prioritization and ranking frameworks,
  • Leading information and data sharing relationships with gas utilities,
  • Manage compliance with cross-utility data protection procedures and auditing to meet regulatory compliance standards,
  • Support engagements with municipalities related to neighborhood electrification and energy system planning as needed,
  • Support IEP related regulatory filings and related internal reporting (e.g., developing monthly team activity report-outs and bi-annual reporting to Department of Public Utilities),
  • Engage with external IEP stakeholders and related working groups, including managing consultant support teams, and helping to develop internal positions in policy-development conversations, and
  • Track advancements in IEP in other jurisdictions and, depending on interest and time, engage in strategy development and thought leadership as it relates to IEP.

Qualifications

  • Minimum: Bachelor’s degree with 5 years of professional experience in a relevant field (energy, policy, economics, engineering) preferred; could be met with other commensurate experience, training, or certifications
  • Demonstrated success in designing, conducting, and presenting analyses; facility with gathering and managing data a plus
  • Demonstrated success in managing projects or initiatives, especially across multiple cross-functional teams or disciplines
  • Strong written, visual, and oral communication and presentation skills
  • Understanding of utility industry structures, policies, and regulation
  • Basic knowledge of gas and/or electric system preferred

Other Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated passion for playing a role in advancing an equitable energy transition
