Director of Production

  1. Summary

 

Reports to: Vice President & General Manager

Employment Status: Full-Time, Exempt

 

  1. Primary Duties and Responsibilities

 

  1. Oversee all technical aspects of client events and concerts at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center (SSC) and at off-site Nashville Symphony performances from planning stages through the control and supervision of productions.
  2. Ensure that events and concerts at the SSC are of the highest quality and produced efficiently in accordance with the established guidelines relating to planning, communication, cost, and scheduling.
  3. Oversee the production team’s scheduling and advancement for Concerts, Special Events, and Internal Events or Programming, including lighting, audio, video, and staging.
  4. Supervise Technical Staff for Concerts, Special Events & Maintenance Activities
  5. Together with Event, Operations, and Production staff, regularly discusses organizational calendar and scheduling confirmations.
  6. Perform event and concert-related responsibilities that may include stage management, lighting, audio, carpentry, or other required areas of support for the Nashville Symphony and clients of the SSC.
  7. Supervise and book labor for concerts, events and maintenance activities.
  8. Interpret technical riders and advance needs of touring productions
  9. Lead & participate in meetings pertaining to Production-related events such as Concerts, Special Events, and Internal Events or Programming.
  10. Create stage plots using CAD Software and lead stage plot meetings.
  11. Maintain technical equipment and facilities to ensure readiness of stages, support areas, and technical systems
  12. Oversee equipment inventories and coordinate regular equipment maintenance schedules.
  13. In collaboration with the General Manager and Venue Management team, advise staff on equipment purchases, doing research and obtaining quotes as necessary
  14. Adhere to technical production budgets and track departmental expenses.
  15. Prepare event billing that accounts for labor and equipment charges in a timely manner.
  16. Review and submit payrolls for all part-time technical staff.
  17. Recruit, hire, train, and review the performance of all production crew members.
  18. Using SSC policies and procedures, local life safety codes and common sense, ensure the safety of clients, their guests, artists, and building staff by taking proactive steps to identify and cure potential risks. In the event of an emergency, assume life safety, crowd control and/or evacuation responsibility in consultation with building security and local authorities
  19. Drive box truck with manual transmission and forklift.

 

 

The duties listed above are not all inclusive.  The person in this position is expected to perform other work-related duties as assigned even though they may not be considered primary duties.

 

  1. Supervisory Responsibilities

 

The Director of Production supervises the Audio Director, Production Manager, Assistant Production Manager, Orchestra Stage Manager, Sr. Lighting Director, and part-time production labor. The Director of Production carries out all supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to, interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

  1. Education:

Bachelor degree in technical theater, music business or other related field

                       

  1. Experience:

At least 5 years of experience within the production field

  1. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Working knowledge of theater lighting systems, audio and video systems, and orchestras

 

Strong communications skills for negotiating with vendors and dealing with customer service issues

 

Ability to work with a broad spectrum of personalities and to exhibit patience and understanding

 

Ability to work as a team member with a positive, helpful attitude in developing creative response and solutions to needs and issues

 

Excellent computer skills; working knowledge of Microsoft Office products, CAD and building systems programs

Ability to multi-task and work under pressure in a fast-paced environment

 

Ability to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends, depending on operational needs of the staff or required maintenance of systems

 

Stellar organizational skills with attention to detail and ability to schedule priorities to maximize efficiency and institutional goals

 

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex technical manuals and specifications, legal regulations, codes and documents; ability to create routine and complex procedures, reports and documents; ability to translate technical terminology to lay terms
