Position Summary
The Teacher Assistant supports classroom instruction and student supervision under the direction of a licensed teacher. This position assists with instructional activities, student management, and daily classroom operations while promoting a safe, supportive, and effective learning environment aligned with district and North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) expectations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist with supervision of students in the classroom, on campus, and during transitions
- Support instructional activities with individuals and small groups as directed by the teacher
- Assist with classroom management and implementation of daily routines
- Provide assistance with personal care needs of students, as required
- Help prepare, organize, and distribute instructional materials and resources
- Grade, record, and maintain student work as directed by the teacher
- Assist with administration and monitoring of student assessments and testing
- Escort and supervise students throughout the school building and campus
- Support students in adjusting to the school environment, including new student transitions
- Assist with classroom projects and instructional activities
- Operate instructional technology and equipment (e.g., computers, audiovisual tools)
- Maintain accurate records and assist with report distribution and documentation
- Promote a safe, orderly, and secure learning environment
- Maintain confidentiality of student and school information in accordance with FERPA and district policies
- Build and maintain positive relationships with students, staff, and families
- Participate in professional development, training, and staff meetings as required
- Follow all Macon County Schools policies, procedures, and expectations regarding attendance, punctuality, and professional conduct
- Demonstrate initiative, flexibility, and teamwork in supporting school operations
- Communicate effectively with supervisors regarding concerns, issues, or unusual events
- Perform other duties as assigned by school administration

- Basic knowledge of child growth and development
- Understanding of diverse learning needs, including exceptional children (EC)
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Ability to follow directions and work collaboratively with certified staff
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality
Physical Requirements
- Medium work classification
- Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 20 pounds frequently, and 10 pounds as needed
- Ability to lift and assist students for personal care needs
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, and active engagement with students
Terms of Employment
- Full-time position with benefits
- Salary based on Macon County Schools salary schedule and state guidelines

Minimum Qualifications
Education (must meet one of the following):
- Associate degree or higher from an accredited institution with a minimum 2.5 GPA; OR
- Completion of at least 48 semester hours of college coursework (including core courses) with a minimum 2.5 GPA; OR enrolled in a Education Program
