ABOUT THE ROLEMunicipal Apparel is seeking a highly motivated Accounting Manager to join our growing finance team. This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for overseeing core accounting operations (AP, AR, and GL). A key priority for this role will be absorbing and internalizing responsibilities currently performed by our outsourced accounting partner as we scale our in-house function to support our footwear and apparel businesses.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES• Oversee and manage all day-to-day activities across Accounts Payable (AP), Accounts Receivable (AR), and General Ledger (GL) functions
• Ensure accurate and timely recording of all financial transactions in NetSuite
• Review and approve journal entries, account reconciliations, and balance sheet schedules
• Maintain chart of accounts and ensure proper classification of transactions in accordance with GAAP
• Oversee transaction coding and categorization to ensure accuracy and consistency across all accounts
• Review and monitor sales tax obligations, ensuring compliance across all applicable jurisdictions
Monthly Close Process• Own and manage the end-to-end monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close process
• Develop, maintain, and continuously improve the close calendar and checklist to ensure ontime delivery
• Prepare and review monthly financial statements, management reports, and variance analyses
• Lead monthly financial review meetings with internal stakeholders to discuss results, trends, and action items
• Coordinate with internal stakeholders to gather information and resolve close-related issues
• Ensure all reconciliations and supporting schedules are completed accurately and reviewed prior to close
Cash Flow Management• Own and maintain a rolling 13-week cash flow forecast, updating weekly to reflect actual cash activity and forward-looking projections
• Monitor daily cash position and proactively identify risks, shortfalls, or opportunities to optimize liquidity
• Partner with the VP of Finance & Operations to communicate cash flow status and support strategic planning decisions
Team Leadership & Development• Lead the transition of accounting functions currently managed by the outsourced accounting firm into the internal team, ensuring continuity, knowledge transfer, and no disruption to operations
• Recruit, hire, and onboard accounting staff as the organization scales its financial function
• Provide coaching, mentorship, and performance feedback to direct reports
• Define roles and responsibilities within the team and establish clear workflows and accountability
• Foster a collaborative team culture centered on accuracy, integrity, and continuous improvement
Systems & Process Improvement• Serve as a key user and functional owner of NetSuite; optimize use of the system for accounting workflows
• Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency, accuracy, and scalability
• Develop and enforce internal controls, accounting policies, and standard operating procedures
• Support system integrations and ERP enhancements as the business grows
Compliance & Audit Support• Ensure compliance with GAAP and all applicable regulatory requirements
• Serve as a primary point of contact for external auditors and manage the annual audit process
• Maintain and strengthen internal controls environment
QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance
• Active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license
• 4 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 1 year in a supervisory or management role
• Public accounting experience strongly preferred
• Hands-on experience with NetSuite ERP
• Strong command of GAAP and financial reporting standards
• Proven ability to manage and improve the monthly close process
• Experience managing AP, AR, and GL functions
• Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills
Preferred• Experience in footwear, apparel, retail, consumer goods, or a similar product-based industry
• Experience building or scaling an accounting team in a growth-stage company
• Familiarity with inventory accounting, cost of goods sold, and multi-channel revenue recognition
• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial modeling
