Long Term Substitute Special Ed Teacher

Summary:

Green Mountain Unified High School is seeking a caring, flexible, and dedicated Substitute Special Education Teacher to support students in a Life Skills program serving individuals with moderate to severe disabilities. The substitute will provide instruction in functional academics, daily living skills, and assist with maintaining a supportive, structured classroom environment. This role supports students' independence, communication, and overall success across school settings.

Key Responsibilities:

Provide instruction in functional academics and daily living skills according to established lesson plans and student ability levels.

Support implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) developed by teachers, parents, administrators, and related service providers.

Utilize a variety of teaching strategies to engage students with cognitive disabilities and other qualifying needs.

Assist students with daily living skills such as hygiene, safety, food preparation, and basic functional routines.

Monitor student engagement and behavior, collect simple data, and communicate any concerns to the appropriate staff.

Support collaboration with paraprofessionals and follow directions for implementing occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech-language service activities.

Maintain a safe, organized, and positive learning environment.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree preferred.

Valid Vermont teaching license (Special Education certification preferred).

Ability to read and follow instructional plans, safety procedures, and student support guidelines.

Strong communication skills for working with students, staff, and families.

Ability to problem-solve and adapt to a variety of structured and unstructured situations.

Physical ability to meet classroom needs (e.g., standing, walking, assisting students, occasional lifting up to 20 lbs as needed).
