What are the responsibilities and job description for the Subsurface Specialist | St. Louis, MO position at MSH?
About the Role
We're looking for a Subsurface Specialist to join a growing field services team in the St. Louis area. In this role, you'll combine hands-on technical expertise with client-facing skills to help ensure the safety and success of construction and infrastructure projects. You'll use advanced scanning and data-capture technologies to investigate underground conditions, support critical project decisions, and help reduce risks that could impact timelines and budgets.
This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys variety — split between technical fieldwork, consultative client interaction, and business development — while working alongside multidisciplinary teams on projects ranging from urban infrastructure to large-scale construction developments.
What You'll Do
- Conduct subsurface investigations using ground-penetrating radar (GPR), electromagnetic (EM) pipe location, and other scanning technologies, capturing data digitally through GPS-integrated field software
- Deliver accurate on-site mark-outs, solutions, and reports that meet company quality and safety standards
- Engage with clients before, during, and after fieldwork to ensure thorough and reliable data collection
- Identify and pursue new business opportunities through site visits, office outreach, and industry networking events
- Partner with regional business development, account management, and branch leadership to support cross-selling into related service lines
- Prepare custom quotes, proposals, and pricing, acting as a subject-matter expert throughout the sales process
- Coordinate scheduling and service delivery with branch operations
- Maintain accurate records of client interactions, leads, and opportunities in the CRM
- Represent the company at industry events, safety meetings, and project kickoffs
- Champion a strong safety culture in every client and team interaction
What We're Looking For
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Technical certification in GPR or a related field preferred
- 2 years of experience in GPR, construction scanning, or underground utility mapping preferred, with verifiable references
- Prior sales or customer-facing experience in a technical or industrial services environment is a strong plus
- Valid, unrestricted driver's license with a clean driving record
- Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills, with comfort in a consultative sales approach
- Solid report-writing and technical documentation abilities
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office; CRM experience a plus
- Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and comfortable managing shifting priorities and deadlines
- Ability to lift 50 lbs, work outdoors in varying conditions, and travel locally within a defined territory
- Must be able to stand, walk, or crouch for extended periods
Candidates selected for employment must pass a post-offer drug/alcohol screen, background check, and motor vehicle records check.
