A well-established community-focused financial institution is seeking a Commercial Underwriter (Levels I–III) to join its credit team. This role is responsible for analyzing and underwriting commercial credit requests, supporting relationship managers, and maintaining high credit quality across the portfolio. Key Responsibilities
Review loan submissions for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with underwriting standards.
Underwrite commercial, small business, CRE, and construction loans ranging roughly from $5MM–$20MM.
Prepare detailed credit analyses, risk assessments, and credit authorizations.
Collaborate closely with Relationship Managers and borrowers to gather information, resolve issues, and recommend loan structures and covenants.
Analyze appraisals, collateral, and assumptions; incorporate findings into credit recommendations.
Work with internal teams to ensure timely processing, approval, and closing of loan requests.
Perform financial analysis for covenant testing and annual term loan reviews.
Draft waivers, default letters, and other credit actions.
Support construction lending through contractor qualification, budget reviews, and draw coordination.
Provide coaching and mentorship to Credit Analysts and junior team members.
Handle additional duties as needed to support credit operations.
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, accounting, or equivalent experience.
Minimum of 2 years of commercial underwriting or related credit experience.
Strong analytical skills with the ability to assess complex financial information.
Effective written and verbal communication abilities.
Ability to work collaboratively while maintaining accuracy, efficiency, and professionalism.
Experience in CRE, C&I, or construction lending is ideal. SBA experience is a plus but not required.
