Position Summary
MP is seeking an experienced Tunnel Inspector to oversee and manage tunneling construction activities. This on-site role is responsible for ensuring safety, quality, and compliance with approved design, specifications, and regulations. The Tunnel Inspector will serve as the primary liaison between contractors, project teams, and authorities, while maintaining thorough documentation of all construction activities.
Key Responsibilities
On-site Supervision:
- Oversee daily tunneling operations including excavation, lining, segment installation, and ground improvement.
Quality & Compliance:
- Ensure all activities comply with construction drawings, specifications, codes, and safety standards.
Contractor Coordination:
- Act as the main point of contact between contractors, the project team, and relevant stakeholders.
Review & Endorsement:
- Review and endorse contractor submissions such as method statements, work plans, risk assessments, and schedules.
Progress & Quality Monitoring:
- Monitor construction progress, detect non-conformances, and document issues with corrective actions.
Technical Expertise:
- Provide technical guidance on tunneling methodologies, material selection, and testing procedures.
Documentation:
- Maintain daily logs, photos, and videos to track activities, quantities, and support progress/payment reports.
Safety & Environmental:
- Enforce safety procedures, monitor ground conditions, and ensure compliance with environmental requirements.
Geotechnical Coordination:
- Work with geotechnical and instrumentation teams to monitor ground movement and tunnel stability.
Typical Duties
- Conduct regular tunnel and infrastructure inspections.
- Verify delivered materials and equipment against specifications.
- Witness and approve contractor QA/QC tests.
- Identify and report potential hazards or defects.
- Track installed quantities and prepare supporting documentation for contractor time and material claims.
- Verify as-built drawings and review contractor look-ahead schedules.
- Assist in preparing and negotiating field orders and change orders.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field; Master’s preferred.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license strongly preferred.
- Minimum 10 years of civil engineering experience, with at least 5 years in tunnel construction supervision.
- Strong knowledge of tunnel excavation, lining systems, ground improvement, and instrumentation.
- Familiarity with safety, QA/QC, and environmental regulations in heavy civil/tunnel construction.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and documentation skills.
Salary : $125,000 - $155,000
