In addition, the University Police Department serves as the fire and public safety office for the university.Patrol Officers serve as members of the departments’ patrol operations team. Patrol Officers shall follow directives put forth by department leadership and university management, taking personal ownership for the success of the department and university.Patrol Officers ensure the goals of the department are achieved. This is accomplished through performing a broad range of law enforcement, security, and safety duties and assignments on university property and the surrounding areas.Patrol Officers are responsible for maintaining public order and protecting lives and property.Patrol Officers perform building safety and security, fire code inspections, fire extinguishers and AED inspections, and enforce all Montana state and local criminal/traffic laws. Patrol Officers are responsible for enforcing parking rules and regulations, issuing citations to violators.Patrol Officers are required to work 24 hours/7 days per week. Patrol Officers work a variety of shifts, to include days, afternoons, nights, weekends, and holidays with regularity. Patrol Officers are required to work overtime.Patrol Officers are required to perform all duties and responsibilities in a professional and service-oriented manner.Patrol Officers will be required to perform all duties, as outlined in the officer job description.DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:University Law EnforcementConduct criminal and non-criminal investigations.Conduct traffic accident investigations.Conduct traffic enforcement.Conduct DUI detection and enforcement. (investigations)Interview victims, suspects, and witnesses.Apprehend suspects, offenders, and individuals with warrants.Issue citations, Notice to Appears, and No Trespass Notices to suspects and violators.Preserve crime scenes, photographic documentation, collection, and preservation of evidence.Enforce University policies and procedures.Deliver crime prevention and personal safety education presentations.Mediate disputes.Maintain public order, protect lives and property.Respond to criminal behavior and calls in a timely, efficient, and professional manner.Enforcement of Federal, State and Local laws along with university policies.Provide for the safe and convenient flow of pedestrians and motor vehicle traffic in and around our university community.Prepare written reports and other documentation as required.Present evidence and provide oral testimony in legal proceedings.Enforce university parking rules/regulations. Issue University parking warnings and citations in accordance with policies and procedures.Provide law enforcement assistance to other agencies.Coordinating with Billings Police, Billings Fire, and AMR during emergencies.Assist with maintenance and upkeep of UPD equipment.Perform other law enforcement duties as assigned.Emergency Response.Respond to medical, fire and other emergency situations (i.e., alarms, bomb threats, disturbances)Respond to pedestrian and traffic accidentsRespond to resistance and aggression appropriately while making arrestsPerform other emergency response activities as needed and assignedCampus Safety & SecurityConduct routine motor vehicle, bicycle, and foot patrols.Assist with security at various university functions. (i.e., sporting events, concerts)Conduct building security checks.Conduct building boiler checks.Provide escorts. (i.e. Money Escorts, persons)Observe and report building deficiencies to Facilities Services via FAMIS reporting system.Assist Facilities Services with fire code inspections and fire drills.Maintaining/inspecting monthly and annual fire extinguishers and Automated External Defibrillators. (AEDs)

  • Locking and unlocking buildings.Train with Residence Halls Directors, Resident Assistants, and Housing & Residence Life Staff.Perform other campus safety/security duties as assigned.QUALITIESAbility to operate a motor vehicle safely under various conditions and circumstancesAbility to evaluate situations and use good judgementAbility to use discretion commensurate with lawful authority (i.e., search and seizure)Ability to interact professionally with a diverse campus communityConduct oneself both on and off duty with the highest degree of integrity and honestyExcellent decision-making skills in high-stress and urgent situationsExcellent verbal and written communications skillsKnowledge of State of Montana criminal law, traffic law, and Rules of Criminal Procedure through Montana Code AnnotatedKnowledge of Municipal codes and university policies/proceduresKnowledge of state and federal lawsKnowledge of University Police Department policies/procedures (i.e., Use of Force)Knowledge of fire safety codesKnowledge of university parking rules/regulationsKnowledge of University geographyKnowledge of other law enforcement agencies operating in/around Yellowstone County (i.e., Billings Police, Yellowstone County Sheriff, Highway Patrol, F.B.I./A.T.F.Proficiency with firearms (handgun and rifle)Active shooter trainingPHYSICAL DEMANDS:Must be able to pass a D.O.T. physical, drug screen, psychological testing for fitness for duty as a police officer, and have other physical characteristics (vision, hearing, etc…) commensurate with the ability to perform the job of a police officerPOSITION REQUIREMENTS:University Police Officers may be exposed to life-threatening situations and risk of injury during high risk calls for service such as: barricaded subjects, burglaries, bomb threats, gun calls, drug and alcohol overdose, domestic disturbances, fights, and mentally ill persons.Officers respond to emergency medical situations, which may put them at risk for contact with blood borne pathogens.Officers may also be exposed to dangers involving hazardous materials and fires.University Police Officers are required to work in a variety of weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.University Police Officers are required to work 12 hour shifts. Patrol Officers are required to work 24 hours/7 days per week. Patrol Officers work a variety of shifts, to include days, afternoons, nights, weekends, and holidays with regularity. Patrol Officers are required to work overtime.University Police Officers’ work often involves walking, running, pursuing fleeing subjects on foot, climbing stairs, and physically restraining and handcuffing persons who may be resisting or combative.Possession of a valid and insurable Montana driver’s licenseMaintain annual firearms and CEW/Taser qualificationMaintain CPR, First Aid, Narcan, and AED certificationEducation Required:High School Diploma or GEDExperience Required:NoneEducation Preferred:Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice or other relevant field of studyExperience Preferred:Successfully complete Montana Law Enforcement Academy Basic Police Officer Training or EQ Challenge and has obtained Montana Public Safety Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certification as a Peace Officer.This position is not eligible for sponsorship.
