Engineer / Senior Engineer, Instrument Systems

Molariti, Inc. | Cambridge, MA 02139 | Full-time, on-site | Job ID: MOL-2026-004

Molariti is seeking an Engineer / Senior Engineer to design and build the hardware systems at the core of our instrument platform. This is a highly hands-on role based on-site at The Engine, 750 Main Street, Cambridge, MA. You will own and contribute to the development of fluidic consumables, mechanical subsystems, electronics, and their integration into reliable benchtop instruments. The work spans early prototypes through increasingly integrated and manufacturable systems.

We are looking for a versatile engineer with deep expertise in at least one of mechanical engineering, microfluidics, or electronics and strong working capability across the others. The ideal candidate enjoys taking systems from concept to working hardware, solving problems at the bench, collaborating across scientific and engineering disciplines, and building products in a fast-paced startup environment.

Key Responsibilities

Microfluidic & Mechanical Systems

  • Design, fabricate, and test microfluidic cartridges and flow cells, including channel architecture, sealing, fluidic interfaces, and electrode integration.
  • Develop disposable and reusable consumable formats with attention to materials compatibility, biocompatibility, contamination, and carryover.
  • Design instrument enclosures, fixtures, mounts, fluidic manifolds, thermal-control components, shielding, and interfaces for automated handling.
  • Translate concepts into CAD, prototypes, test fixtures, and production-ready designs.
  • Work with machining, molding, PCB, and other manufacturing vendors and rapidly iterate designs based on test results.

Electronics & System Integration

  • Integrate, adapt, and characterize low-noise analog and mixed-signal electronics, including existing data acquisition hardware, for sensitive electrical measurements.
  • Integrate pumps, valves, sensors, consumable identification, environmental monitoring, and other instrument subsystems into complete systems.
  • Define subsystem requirements, interfaces, and engineering specifications in collaboration with scientific and software teams.
  • Develop test methods and fixtures for subsystem characterization, integration testing, and design verification.
  • Troubleshoot fluidic, mechanical, electrical, and signal-quality issues and drive problems from root cause through resolution.
  • Maintain engineering documentation suitable for design reviews, verification, qualification, and future product development.

Cross-Functional Development

  • Work closely with scientists, software engineers, and data teams to translate assay and analytical requirements into instrument specifications.
  • Communicate engineering constraints, test results, risks, and design tradeoffs clearly across technical disciplines.
  • Participate in architecture decisions, technical reviews, experimental planning, and program milestones.
  • Identify emerging fabrication, fluidic, sensing, and instrumentation technologies that could improve system performance, reliability, or manufacturability.

Qualifications

Required

  • BS, MS, or PhD in Mechanical, Electrical, Biomedical, Chemical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline
  • 3 years of hands-on hardware development experience for the Engineer level; typically 7 years for the Senior Engineer level
  • Demonstrated strength in at least two of the following: microfluidic device or cartridge design and fabrication; precision mechanical design using SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or equivalent; analog, mixed-signal, or instrumentation electronics integration, including PCB-level debugging and modification
  • Strong practical prototyping skills, which may include 3D printing, machining, bonding, soldering, assembly, and electrical or fluidic bench testing
  • Experience taking hardware from initial concept through prototype and into manufacturing
  • Strong engineering documentation and experimental practices
  • Ability to work effectively across engineering, scientific, and software disciplines

Preferred

  • Experience with low-current, low-noise, or other sensitive electrical measurement systems
  • Experience developing microfluidic systems using thermoplastics, glass, silicon, or related materials
  • Familiarity with cleanroom fabrication and microfabrication processes
  • Experience designing consumables for manufacturing using processes such as injection molding, laser welding, ultrasonic bonding, or adhesive bonding
  • Experience developing scientific, diagnostic, or laboratory instrumentation
  • Familiarity with quality and safety standards applicable to laboratory and life science instrumentation, including IEC 61010
  • Familiarity with GMP equipment requirements, qualification, and documentation practices
  • Embedded systems, firmware, motion control, or laboratory automation experience
  • Experience working in an early-stage or rapidly growing company

What We Offer

  • An opportunity to shape the hardware architecture of a new biomolecular measurement platform
  • Broad technical ownership across fluidics, mechanical systems, electronics, and instrument integration
  • Close collaboration with scientists and engineers developing the underlying measurement technology
  • The opportunity to grow into technical leadership as the engineering organization expands
  • Equity participation with meaningful upside
