Programmer Supervisor to lead automation and controls initiatives within a fast-paced food production environment. Position Overview:
The PLC Programmer Supervisor will oversee PLC programming, troubleshooting, automation system integration, and continuous improvement initiatives across manufacturing operations. This role will support highly automated production and packaging systems while ensuring maximum uptime, safety, efficiency, and compliance within a regulated food manufacturing environment.
The ideal candidate will bring strong hands-on experience with Allen-Bradley or Siemens PLC platforms within food, dairy, beverage, or other regulated manufacturing industries. This individual will also supervise and mentor maintenance and controls personnel while partnering closely with engineering, operations, and maintenance teams.
Key Responsibilities:
- Program, troubleshoot, and maintain PLC systems using Allen-Bradley (Studio 5000/RSLogix) or Siemens platforms.
- Develop and maintain HMI/SCADA applications including FactoryTalk View or Wonderware systems.
- Support automated processing and packaging equipment including conveyors, mixers, vats, CIP systems, pasteurization controls, and packaging machinery.
- Monitor and optimize process controls involving temperature, pressure, flow, and sanitation systems.
- Troubleshoot electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and automation-related production issues to minimize downtime.
- Integrate PLC systems with industrial networking protocols including Ethernet/IP, Modbus, and Profibus.
- Lead and supervise a team of 4 Maintenance Technicians while providing technical guidance and mentorship.
- Support installation, commissioning, and startup of new automation equipment and plant expansion projects.
- Ensure compliance with GMP, HACCP, OSHA, and Lockout/Tagout safety standards.
- Maintain accurate documentation including wiring diagrams, I/O lists, backups, and system changes.
- Collaborate with Engineering, Operations, and Maintenance teams to improve production efficiency and reliability.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to support company growth and operational excellence.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Controls Engineering, or related field preferred. Equivalent technical training and experience will also be considered.
- 3–5 years of PLC programming and controls experience within food, dairy, beverage, or regulated manufacturing environments.
- Strong proficiency with:
- Allen-Bradley Logix5000 / Studio 5000
- Siemens PLC platforms
- HMI/SCADA systems (FactoryTalk View, Wonderware, etc.)
- Industrial networking protocols (Ethernet/IP, Profibus, Modbus)
- Experience supporting automated manufacturing and packaging equipment.
- Previous leadership or supervisory experience managing maintenance or controls personnel preferred.
- Knowledge of GMPs, HACCP, CIP systems, pasteurization controls, and sanitary processing environments strongly preferred.
- Comfortable working in refrigerated, wet, and production manufacturing environments.
- Ability to work permanent overnight shifts and weekends consistently.
