Position Summary
The Estimator is responsible for determining the cost and value of construction projects, including bids, addendums, and other budget-driven opportunities. This role requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple deadlines while ensuring accuracy throughout the estimating process—from initial review to post-bid follow-up.
Estimators are expected to be proficient in downloading and reviewing drawings using all company-standard software, including digital takeoff software, Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, and other document control systems commonly used by general contractors.
Key Responsibilities
Project Analysis & Document Review
- Thoroughly review and interpret concrete specifications, contract documents, project requirements and identify potential challenges
- Analyze GC-developed schedules and determine realistic durations and sequencing for project scopes
- Identify scope gaps, overlaps, and inconsistencies within project documents
- Develop value engineering options and alternative solutions when appropriate
Estimating & Proposal Development
- Perform detailed quantity takeoffs
- Develop accurate and competitive cost estimates based on labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor pricing
- Prepare comprehensive and professional bid proposals aligned with project requirements and company standards
- Review and incorporate addenda, and revisions into project estimates
Project Coordination & Communication
- Maintain ongoing communication with general contractors, subcontractors, and vendors to obtain necessary pricing, clarifications, and project updates
- Track and provide continuous updates on the status and progress of bids and proposals
- Collaborate with the Director of Preconstruction to strategically position bids and support efforts to secure awarded work
· Participate in pre-bid meetings, scope reviews, and negotiations as required
Post-Bid & Project Handoff
- Issue award letters to MSC personnel upon successful bid award
- Lead turnover meetings with field operations and project management teams, ensuring clear communication of scope, assumptions, and risks
- Provide ongoing support to project teams for cost clarification and budget alignment
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with internal departments, including Operations, Project Management, and Finance, throughout the lifecycle of awarded projects
- Support project teams by providing clarifications, updates, and cost-related insights as needed
- Maintain accountability for all estimating work before, during, and after the bidding process
- Be willing when available to assist team members meet their project requirements
Time Management & Accountability
- Manage multiple bids and deadlines simultaneously while maintaining a high level of accuracy and organization
- Ensure all estimating deliverables are completed accurately and on time
- Demonstrate ownership and responsibility for all assigned projects and deliverables including work performed by others
Client & Stakeholder Engagement
- Serve as a primary point of contact for general contractors, clients, and key subcontractors during the bidding process
- Lead communication efforts to gather critical project information and clarify scope requirements
- Participate in pre-bid meetings, scope reviews, and negotiations
