About Us:
Midwest Motors is a family-owned dealership group with over 40 years of proudly serving our communities. Our Human Resources team, based at Inver Grove Honda, supports five dealership locations across the Twin Cities: Inver Grove Honda, Inver Grove Toyota, Maplewood Toyota, Eden Prairie Nissan, and Forest Lake Ford.
Position Summary:
This is a full-time, non-exempt position. The HR Specialist (Leave of Absence) manages the full life cycle of employee leave programs, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. This role partners closely with third-party administrators (TPAs) to administer Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML), workers’ compensation, and other absence programs. The position also supports workers’ compensation claim administration and provides benefits administration backup support for Payroll & Benefits Specialist. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, knowledgeable in leave laws, and able to handle sensitive employee matters with professionalism and empathy.
Key Responsibilities:
- Administer employee leaves of absence (e.g., FMLA, state leave, PFML, ADA, military, parental, and company-sponsored), serving as the primary point of contact and ensuring accurate and timely processing in HRIS and leave management systems.
- Maintain confidentiality and sensitivity when handling employee health and personal information.
- Coordinate return-to-work activities, including fitness-for-duty documentation and reasonable accommodation discussions.
- Provide administrative support for workers’ compensation claim management, including claim setup, documentation, and ongoing tracking.
- Attend safety meetings regularly and actively participate in safety programs.
- Maintain accurate records and assist with audits, reporting, and compliance documentation.
- Serve as backup support for benefits administration functions, including enrollments, life event changes, employee inquiries, and invoicing.
- Perform other HR-related duties and projects assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in HR, Business Administration, or related field, or equivalent experience
- Minimum 1 year of leave administration experience - FMLA, PFML, workers’ compensation
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local leave laws
- Experience working with TPAs and vendors
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Professional, discreet, and customer-focused approach
- Experience with HRIS systems; UKG preferred
Work Environment:
- Perform job duties in a professional office environment, both independently and collaboratively
- Regularly use a computer and standard office equipment, including extended periods of typing and screen use
- Communicate effectively with employees, managers, and external partners via phone, email, and in person
- Occasionally lift and/or move items up to 15 pounds
- Travel occasionally between dealership locations within the Twin Cities area
