Midwest Behavioral Health Center is seeking an organized, responsive, and people-focused Human Resources Generalist to join our administrative team.

The HR Generalist will support the day-to-day human resources operations of MBHC, with a strong focus on recruitment, onboarding, employee records, HRIS administration, compliance tracking, employee support, and payroll and benefits administration.
We’re looking for someone who is detail-oriented, dependable, comfortable juggling multiple priorities, and genuinely enjoys helping people navigate processes. This role is a great fit for someone who can stay organized, follow through, communicate clearly, and notice the little things before they become big problems.
What You’ll Do
Keep Recruiting Moving
- Coordinate job postings, applicant screening, candidate communication, and interview scheduling.
- Maintain accurate applicant information and statuses within the applicant tracking system.
- Support recruitment outreach with schools, community organizations, workforce partners, and other recruiting resources.
- Help ensure candidates receive timely communication throughout the hiring process.
- Coordinate pre-employment steps once hiring decisions are made.
Own the Details of Onboarding
- Coordinate new-hire onboarding requirements including HRIS invitations, employment forms, background checks, fingerprinting, required clearances, identification documents, and credential verification.
- Track completion of onboarding activities and follow up on missing or incomplete items.
- Maintain organized onboarding records and checklists.
- Help new employees understand what is required before their first day and support them through the process.
- Coordinate with leaders and new hires to keep start dates and onboarding requirements on track.
Keep Employee Records Accurate & Compliant
- Maintain complete, organized, and accurate electronic personnel files.
- Conduct routine file audits and identify missing, incomplete, or expired documentation.
- Monitor employee licenses, credentials, certifications, training, clearances, and other required documentation.
- Track upcoming expiration dates and follow up with employees and leaders before requirements lapse.
- Assist with I-9, E-Verify, employment verification, and other required employment eligibility processes.
- Support monitoring of supervision documentation and other employee-related compliance requirements.
Help Keep HRIS Running Smoothly
- Maintain accurate employee information within the HRIS, including employment status, job assignments, reporting relationships, and other approved changes.
- Assist employees and leaders with routine HRIS questions.
- Help troubleshoot basic self-service and system-access issues.
- Generate HR reports related to onboarding, employee records, training, compliance, recruiting, and other assigned metrics.
- Identify missing or inconsistent employee information and help resolve discrepancies.
Be a Resource for Employees & Leaders
- Respond to routine employee questions regarding HR processes, policies, PTO procedures, onboarding requirements, benefits administration, and HR systems.
- Support leaders with HR documentation, attendance concerns, performance-management processes, and corrective-action administration.
- Assist with internal investigations as directed by gathering documentation, coordinating meetings, and maintaining confidential records.
- Maintain strict confidentiality when working with employee, applicant, payroll, medical, investigation, and other sensitive information.
- Help create a responsive, professional, and supportive employee experience.
Support Payroll & Benefits Administration
- Assist with payroll preparation by reviewing employee information, timekeeping data, approved pay changes, and required documentation.
- Help identify and resolve routine timekeeping or payroll discrepancies.
- Support employees with basic payroll-related questions and escalate complex issues when needed.
- Assist with benefits enrollment processes, documentation, and employee questions.
- Maintain accurate benefits records and support enrollment changes as directed.
- Coordinate employee leave documentation and return-to-work records.
Help Us Build Strong HR Processes
- Assist with implementation and administration of HR policies, procedures, forms, checklists, and workflows.
- Support employee engagement, retention, recognition, and satisfaction initiatives.
- Help prepare employee communications, orientation materials, and HR training resources.
- Identify recurring administrative issues, compliance gaps, or process inefficiencies and bring them forward for improvement.
- Support HR metrics and key performance indicators related to recruitment, onboarding, retention, compliance, training, and employee records.
- Collaborate with leaders and employees across departments to keep HR processes timely and organized.
What We’re Looking For
Required
- Minimum of two (2) years of human resources experience.
- Experience using HRIS, applicant tracking, payroll, timekeeping, or similar HR systems.
- Working knowledge of employment practices, confidentiality requirements, employee records, and HR compliance.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records.
- Excellent organization and time-management skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, and follow-up items at the same time.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Professional interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with employees, applicants, leaders, vendors, and external partners.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment when handling sensitive information.
- Ability to identify issues, gather information, and know when to escalate a concern.
- Ability to work independently while maintaining strong communication and follow-through.
Preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Psychology, Organizational Leadership, or a related field.
- SHRM-CP, PHR, or similar human resource certification.
- Experience working in healthcare, behavioral healthcare, residential treatment, human services, or another highly regulated environment.
- Experience in an HR Generalist, HR Coordinator, HR Specialist, recruiting, or onboarding role.
- Experience with recruitment, onboarding, background screening, I-9/E-Verify, employee-file compliance, training tracking, or credential monitoring.
- Experience supporting payroll and benefits administration.
- Experience working in a growing organization where processes and systems are still being developed.
