Field Engineer Trainee

Job Summary

The Field Engineer Trainee supports field engineering, surveying, construction layout, and project control activities for heavy civil construction projects. Under the direction of the Senior Field Engineer, the incumbent assists with construction staking, topographic surveys, data collection, CAD drafting, surface modeling, quality control verification, and project documentation.

This position works on a variety of heavy civil construction projects including roadways, paving, drainage systems, utility infrastructure, subdivisions, commercial developments, and site construction. The Field Engineer Trainee is expected to progressively assume greater responsibility while developing proficiency in field engineering practices, construction surveying, and project support functions.

Duties/Responsibilities

· Perform construction staking and layout for roads, utilities, structures, grading, and site development projects.

· Set and maintain hubs, stakes, offsets, benchmarks, and project control points.

· Conduct topographic surveys and field verification activities.

· Operate GNSS/RTK systems, robotic total stations, digital levels, base stations, and related survey equipment.

· Read and interpret construction plans, specifications, profiles, alignments, and engineering drawings.

· Perform calculations involving coordinates, grades, elevations, alignments, and utility installations.

· Process survey and construction layout data and maintain project files.

· Develop and maintain 3D surfaces for machine control and guidance systems.

· Support quality assurance and quality control initiatives.

· Follow all company safety policies and procedures and perform other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

· Knowledge of basic mathematics, geometry, and algebra.

· Strong spatial reasoning and problem-solving abilities.

· Ability to read and interpret construction plans and technical drawings.

· Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.

· Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, subcontractors, and clients.

· Ability to work independently and within a team environment.

Education and Experience

· High school diploma or equivalent required.

· Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Surveying, Geomatics, Engineering Technology, or related field preferred.

· Minimum of 2 years’ experience in construction, surveying, engineering support, CAD drafting, or heavy civil operations required.

· Familiarity with Carlson CAD, Topcon MAGNET, GNSS equipment, machine control systems, or total stations preferred.

· Valid driver’s license required.

· Survey, engineering, or construction-related certifications are preferred but not required.

Security and Access Requirements

· Must successfully pass all required background screening requirements.

· Must comply with company drug and alcohol testing policies.

· Must be eligible to obtain and maintain access to project sites including White Sands Missile Range, Fort Bliss, and Holloman Air Force Base.

Work Environment

· Work is performed in both office and outdoor construction environments.

· Regular exposure to moving equipment, vehicle traffic, dust, noise, vibration, and weather conditions.

· Frequent work on uneven terrain, slopes, excavations, and active construction sites.

· Travel between project locations may be required.

Physical Requirements

· Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds at times.

· Must be able to stand, walk, and perform job duties for extended periods.

· Exposure to outdoor weather conditions, dust, and loud machinery.

· Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).

Pay: $25.00 - $30.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40.0 – 50.0 per week
