Mentor A Promise
York, NY Volunteer
POSTED ON 8/3/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 9/1/2026
Mentor A Promise is a New York City–based nonprofit serving children and youth (ages 5–18) experiencing housing instability, grounded in the belief that every child is a Promise—full of potential, dignity, and possibility. We deliver consistent, high-quality programming across mentorship, literacy, social-emotional learning, and creative expression in shelters, schools, and community spaces, creating structured environments where students can grow, be seen, and build lasting skills. Through signature experiences like The Imagination Studio, The Kitchen Table, The Sound Lab, and The Story Space, we nurture academic development, emotional well-being, and creative voice, all within a trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and accessibility-centered framework. Our work prioritizes dignity-protective storytelling, consent-driven engagement, and deep community partnership, ensuring that how we serve is as intentional as whom we serve. We are not only addressing immediate needs - we are building pathways to confidence, belonging, and long-term opportunity, so every child has the support and foundation to carry their promise forward.

About Mentor A Promise

Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a New York City–based nonprofit organization serving children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability through mentorship, literacy, social-emotional learning, educational enrichment, workforce development, creative opportunity, advocacy, housing innovation, and community-centered support.

At MAP, mentorship is one of the most powerful tools for creating consistency, connection, confidence, and opportunity in a child's life.

We believe great mentors are developed through intentional training, continuous learning, strong support systems, and a commitment to growth.

About PromiseLearning

PromiseLearning is MAP's education, curriculum, instructional design, learning innovation, literacy, workforce readiness, and academic enrichment division. PromiseLearning helps ensure that everyone who serves MAP's mission has access to meaningful learning and development opportunities.

About Mentor Learning & Training

We're building a strong, prepared, and committed mentor community. One that supports children and youth with consistency, care, and purpose. Our aim is for mentors to stay with us for the long haul because they feel supported, fulfilled, and connected to the impact of their work. Through these relationships, we build deeper trust with the mentees and families we serve.

Role Overview

The Content Specialist for the Mentor Organization serves as the person responsible for the design and implementation of MAP's mentor training and development programs.

This role oversees mentor learning pathways, training content, and facilitation strategies for mentors, ensuring that mentors are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to build meaningful relationships with children and youth.

The ideal candidate is passionate about adult learning, mentorship, leadership development, and creating high-quality learning experiences.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create scalable learning pathways for mentors, aligned with organizational goals and safeguarding standards, ensuring mentor engagement throughout the learning process
  • Strategize content structure and delivery, making it as accessible as possible; mindful and empathetic toward the time mentors have to prepare and engage.
  • Design useful, reusable templates that optimize mentors' time and help them make the most of their session plans.
  • Facilitate training sessions and learning experiences as needed
  • Collaborate across functions to identify cross-functional content needs and surface existing resources, so we build on what already exists rather than duplicating it.
  • Iterate on materials based on mentor feedback and evolving program needs.

What We're Looking For

  • Experience with instructional design, content creation, learning design, or a related field.
  • Experience with adult learning and mentorship development
  • A talent for turning complex topics or scattered information into clear, structured, engaging materials.
  • Strong empathy for the end user and a bias toward saving them time.
  • Collaborative and proactive; comfortable reaching across teams to collect input and relevant resources.
  • Organized, self-directed, and able to move quickly while keeping quality high.
  • A commitment to MAP's mission, values, and trauma-informed, dignity-centered approach.

What You'll Gain

  • The opportunity to directly shape how mentors support children and youth experiencing housing instability.
  • Hands-on experience designing learning content within a growing nonprofit organization.
  • Collaboration with educational leaders, program teams, and executive leadership.
  • Meaningful impact supporting children and families experiencing housing instability.
  • Professional references and letters of recommendation.
