Medical Assistant

Guided by Mended Reeds (agency) mission of empowering and restoring people to fulfilling lives, the Medical Assistant will perform clinical and administrative support duties within a behavioral health medical office.

The position delivers high-quality clinical and administrative assistance to a diverse client base, primarily adults with some youth, addressing mental health, addiction, and related needs. The Medical Assistant will perform clinical support functions, maintain medical operations, assist with client education, and ensure compliance with safety and quality standards.

Certification as a medical assistant (e.g., CMA, CCMA) is preferred but not required in Ohio. This position requires strong communication, professionalism, and teamwork to support an integrated behavioral health environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Clinical Support

Measure and record vital signs, assist with procedures, administer medications under supervision, and document clinical data accurately.

  • Operations and Maintenance

Manage medical supplies and equipment, ensure safety and infection control compliance, and oversee the medication room.

  • Patient Interaction and Education

Provide trauma-informed emotional support, assist clients in understanding treatment plans, and respond effectively to client inquiries.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

  • Clinical proficiency in vital signs, injections, and basic laboratory procedures.
  • Operational skill in inventory management, EMR systems, and medication room oversight.
  • Strong interpersonal communication, empathy, professionalism, and trauma-informed care approaches that foster collaboration among clinical and administrative staff.
  • Highly empathetic and compassionate to effectively support the recovery journey of Mended Reeds' clients.
  • Competent at working with a diverse population of colleagues and patients.
  • Collaborative team player, able to work efficiently and effectively in a multidisciplinary recovery environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and a sense of urgency.
  • Adaptable and agile within a dynamic work environment.
  • Technologically capable and comfortable operating in multiple systems for communication and documentation purposes, including EMR and MS Office Suite preferred.
  • Embraces Mended Reeds' culture of compliance—operates with high integrity and complies with work standards and regulatory requirements.

Detailed Duties

  • Clinical Support

Measure and record vital signs, height, weight, and medical histories. Assist with procedures such as EKGs or basic lab tests under supervision. Administer medications (oral or injection) and immunizations as directed. Review patient records for allergies, medications, and problem lists. Provide emergency care using basic life support when needed.

  • Operations and Maintenance

Stock exam rooms and manage inventory, ordering supplies as needed. Clean and sterilize equipment, maintaining infection control standards per OSHA guidelines. Manage the medication room, ensuring proper storage, labeling, and documentation. Maintain EMR updates and coordinate administrative processes. Report defective equipment and assist with quality improvement activities.

  • Patient Interaction and Education

Greet and support patients, chaperone exams, and educate clients on medications, procedures, coping skills, and follow-up care. Handle patient questions with empathy, promote independence, and use trauma-informed approaches to address behaviors influenced by mental health or trauma.

Physical Demands

This position requires the ability to stand or walk for extended periods, lift and move up to 25 pounds, and assist clients safely when necessary. The role also involves frequent bending, reaching, and handling of clinical equipment and supplies in a standard medical office environment.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Certification (e.g., CMA, CCMA) advantageous but not required in Ohio.
  • One to two years of experience in a healthcare setting, preferably in a behavioral health or medical office environment.
  • Current CPR certification
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must pass all Mended Reeds, state, and accreditation screenings, including a drug screen and BCI/FBI background check.
  • Must not appear on applicable exclusion or suspension lists (i.e., OIG, SAM, ODM).

Work Environment:

  • Medical office setting with direct client interaction.
  • Standard office hours with occasional overtime or weekend shifts as required.
