Position Overview
The Director of Mechanical Engineering will lead all mechanical design, development, and innovation activities for a groundbreaking medical device platform. This role is responsible for guiding a multi-site, multidisciplinary engineering team across the U.S., Europe, and Asia. The director will oversee the full product lifecycle—from concept and architecture through design, verification, manufacturing transfer, and sustaining engineering.
This position requires a highly technical, hands-on leader with deep experience in regulated medical device development (Class II or III preferred). The successful candidate will be based in Danvers, Massachusetts and serve as the primary decision-maker and organizational anchor for mechanical engineering efforts.
Key Responsibilities
- Strategic Leadership & Execution
- Develop the mechanical engineering vision, strategy, and roadmap aligned with company goals.
- Lead and mentor a global team of mechanical engineers, designers, and technical specialists.
- Establish engineering processes, tools, and best practices to support rapid development and scalable growth.
- Product Development
- Direct mechanical architecture, design, and integration for a novel medical device system.
- Drive design reviews, risk analyses, DFM/DFA, and system-level engineering decisions.
- Ensure mechanical designs meet performance, safety, regulatory, and cost requirements.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner closely with R&D, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Quality, Regulatory, Clinical, and Operations teams.
- Collaborate with manufacturing and supply chain teams to support component sourcing, prototyping, and production readiness.
- Engage with external partners, contract manufacturers, and suppliers as needed.
- Regulatory & Quality Compliance
- Ensure all mechanical engineering activities adhere to global medical device regulatory standards (ISO 13485, FDA 21 CFR 820, IEC standards, etc.).
- Lead documentation, verification, and validation efforts required for regulatory submissions.
- Team Development & Global Coordination
- Build, scale, and develop a diverse and high-performing global engineering team.
- Provide technical guidance, career development, and foster a culture of innovation, accountability, and collaboration.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field; PhD a plus.
- 10 years of mechanical engineering experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership role within the medical device industry.
- Proven track record in leading global engineering teams and delivering complex electromechanical devices to market.
- Expertise in precision mechanical design, mechatronics, robotics, or similar technologies.
- Experience working with highly regulated medical devices (Class II/III).
- Strong understanding of mechanical analysis, CAD tools, tolerance stack-ups, materials, and manufacturing methods.
- Demonstrated ability to lead through ambiguity and drive clarity in first-of-its-kind product development.
- Excellent communication, decision-making, and organizational skills.
- Must be able to work on-site in Danvers, Massachusetts.
