Inpatient Coder

Location: Remote
Schedule: Monday-Friday, flexible hours between 7:00 AM-7:00 PM
Salary: $60,000-$70,000 annually

We are seeking an experienced Inpatient Coding Specialist to join our team and support accurate, compliant, and timely coding of complex acute-care inpatient records. This role is ideal for a highly experienced inpatient coder with strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, MS-DRG, and APR-DRG methodologies.

The successful candidate will have experience coding complex cases in academic medical centers, trauma hospitals, or teaching facilities and will work closely with CDI, HIM, physicians, and revenue cycle teams.

• Analyze inpatient health records and accurately assign ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS diagnosis and procedure codes.
• Apply current coding regulations, payer requirements, and industry guidelines to ensure compliant code assignment.
• Determine appropriate MS-DRG and APR-DRG classifications based on complete clinical documentation.
• Review records for principal and secondary diagnoses, procedures, POA indicators, discharge disposition, and other required abstracted data.
• Identify documentation inconsistencies and initiate compliant physician documentation clarification requests when additional information is needed.
• Monitor coding quality and resolve pre-bill edits or coding discrepancies prior to claim submission.
• Enter coding and abstracted information into designated coding and health information systems.
• Collaborate with Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI), HIM, physicians, and revenue cycle teams to promote complete and accurate documentation.
• Maintain established productivity, quality, and turnaround-time expectations.
• Stay current on coding updates, reimbursement changes, and regulatory requirements through ongoing education.

• AHIMA credential required: CCS, RHIT, or RHIA.
• Associate's degree or higher in Health Information Management (HIM) or a related field.
• Minimum of 5 years of recent inpatient acute-care coding experience.
• Experience coding for large academic medical centers, trauma hospitals, or teaching facilities.
• Advanced knowledge of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, MS-DRG, and APR-DRG methodologies.
• Experience coding complex inpatient cases across multiple specialties, including:
  • Transplant
  • Trauma
  • Behavioral Health
  • Cardiovascular
  • Orthopedic
  • Neurological
  • Gastrointestinal
  • Vascular
  • Bariatric
  • Colorectal
  • Urology
  • Gynecology
  • Surgical specialties
• Familiarity with Epic, 3M, or comparable EHR/coding applications.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to consistently meet coding accuracy and productivity standards.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
