About the Role

One of the world's premier performing arts institutions is hiring a Broadcast Audio Operations Director to oversee the technical planning and broadcast engineering for its extensive media operation. The organization's media department produces approximately 70 live and pre-recorded broadcasts each season, spanning a Saturday matinee radio series carried on an international network, a dedicated satellite radio channel, and a global cinema series.

The audio operations director participates as a member of the broadcast engineering team under the creative direction of the organization's music producers. This role requires someone who brings a musical background and sensibility to highly technical broadcast work, managing everything from stereo productions to 128 track recordings across multiple locations and wireless systems within the venue.


What the Role Covers

  • Technical planning, design, and maintenance of in-house broadcast facilities, including equipment budgeting and purchases
  • Technical setup for all broadcast and recording scenarios, including microphones, wireless systems, cabling, mix consoles, and VO booths across music mix, live announcer, live interviews, and prerecorded features
  • Providing technical and engineering support for broadcast music producers, including preparation of mixing boards and coordination of microphone setup with relevant departments
  • Audio technical coordination for live cinema transmissions
  • Transmission operations for a network of over 200 radio stations worldwide and internet streaming partners, including end-to-end connections and quality assurance
  • Live broadcast mixing and recording, including large-frame console operation with multiple microphones, hosts, commentators, and guests, and triggering live playback of prerecorded features
  • Recording, editing, mixing, and music underscoring of radio features, interviews, promos, and trailers
  • Organizing and communicating broadcast information and requirements to departments throughout the organization
  • Organizing broadcast engineer work assignments and schedules for staff and freelance engineers, and recruiting and training new hires
  • Managing relationships with key vendors, including contracts, budgets, scheduling, equipment maintenance, and service monitoring
  • Planning, budgeting, and supervising technical capital projects
  • Overseeing asset management planning and execution, including long-term storage


Qualifications

  • Minimum 15 years of professional engineering experience in broadcast, studio, and remote recording
  • Experience working in a supervisory position with a team of engineers
  • Experience with operations planning, design, and maintenance
  • Extensive classical music training and knowledge
  • Live recording and mixing experience, including familiarity with large-frame consoles such as the Studer Vista line and digital audio workstations such as Pyramix
  • Post-production editing and mixing with advanced Pro Tools fluency
  • Live on-air broadcast engineering experience
  • Knowledge of and compliance with broadcast standards
  • Experience with broadcast IP codecs
  • Experience with intercommunications systems (RTS, Clearcom, or Riedel)
  • IP networking knowledge for broadcast infrastructure
  • Technical maintenance engineering experience
  • Extensive experience with both analog formats and digital systems
  • Television broadcast experience
  • Experience with asset management systems such as Soundminer, Enco, or Amazon Glacier
  • Schedule flexibility and the ability to work nights and weekends
