Program Coordinator Registered Nurse Trauma

The Trauma Program Coordinator maintains accountability for the coordination of Trauma Services to ensure an organized, multi-disciplinary approach to quality care. The Trauma Program Coordinator works in close collaboration with the Trauma Medical Director and Trauma Program Manager. Promotes optimal trauma care through implementation of programs, coordination of activities, and evaluation of systems, processes and outcomes. Participates in the development, education and maintenance of trauma performance improvement programs. Responds to Stroke Response Team calls. Assists patient care units with expediting orders/care for the acute stroke patient (order sets, NIHSS, swallow screen, etc.). Assures all patients care units have Stroke Packets available on unit at all times. Rounds daily on all new stroke patients to begin teaching and data collection. Responsible for hospital emergency preparedness, training, drill planning, implementation, and maintain emergency preparedness standards.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

1. Manages, as appropriate, the operational, personnel and financial aspects of the Trauma Program, serves as a liaison to administration and representing the Trauma Program on various hospital and community committees to enhance and foster optimal trauma care management.

2. Responds to Code Trauma while in house.

3. Develops, oversees, implements and evaluates the quality assurance program related to trauma care.

4. Participates in the planning, implementing, evaluating and developing policies, procedures, quality improvement activities and safety standards related to trauma care in collaboration with a multi disciplinary team.

5. Completes trauma data collection, data analysis and development of reports and provides statistical information to Trauma Services and Emergency Department related to trauma care and clinical indicators.

6. Works with the Trauma Medical Director and Emergency Department Manager to coordinate trauma care management across the continuum of trauma care. Including planning and implementing of clinical protocols/practice management guidelines, monitoring care of in-hospital patients and serving as a resource for clinical practice.

7. Communicates, collaborates, networks with and acts as a resource to other members of the health care team within and outside the health system/community in order to ensure continuity and coordination of services. Markets Trauma Services to the public/other health team members.

8. Assesses the educational needs of staff, members of the health care team within and outside of the system, and the community related to Trauma and collaborates with appropriate supporting services to develop/implement appropriate teaching strategies/educational programs for nursing staff orientation and continuing education.

9. Participates in program planning, implementation and evaluation in collaboration with members of the health care team. Identifies opportunities for philanthropic support to aid program objectives. Provides input in the program budget and monitors/maintains budget for service.

10. Participates in trauma performance improvement activities.

11. Coordinates community education trauma education and prevention programs for targeted populations in the community related to injury prevention.

12. Assists in Injury Prevention activities.

13. Participates in the development of trauma care systems at the regional and state levels.

14. Assesses and facilitates own learning needs and attends trauma conferences to remain current in trauma care and changing requirements.

15. Performs other duties as required and directed.

16. Develops and creates networks within the EMS industry to help strengthen relationships and form strategic business plans.

Subsidiary Specific Expectations:

Stroke:

1. Responds to Stroke Response Team calls when available.

2. Assists patient care units with expediting orders/care for the acute stroke patient (order sets. NIHSS, swallow screen, etc.).

3. Assures all patient care units have Stroke Packets available on unit at all times.

4. Maintains internal stroke logs/database.

5. Attends Neuroscience Steering Committee meetings and outside workshops/meetings that relate to stroke care.

6. Participates on GWTG conference calls.

7. Collects/collates patient satisfaction data and reports out to Stroke Workgroup.

8. Maintains competencies related to current stroke research and best practice (8 hours minimum per year). Shares knowledge with staff nurses and facilitates practice change as necessary.

9. Assists Director of Program with ce1tification and intra-cycle review activities.

10. Identifies gaps in patient care and shares findings with Medical Director/Program Director.

11. Attends appropriate Medical Staff meetings with the Medical Director to share performance and outcome data.

12. Identifies educational gaps amongst various professionals and development of multi discipline stroke professions and develops, implements and evaluates educational offerings including planning and assisting with CME education.

13. Follows patients in secondary stroke prevention clinics on a monthly basis.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing. (Associates Degree/Diploma in nursing maybe considered provided Bachelor’s degree in nursing is successfully completed within thirty-six (36) months of hire/transfer date.
  • Valid Michigan Registered Nurse License
  • BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) required or obtained within six months of hire
  • Three (3) years of experience in Emergency Nursing and trauma center environment or OR, ICU in a trauma center environment
  • NIHSS certification, if not current must be obtained within twelve (12) months of hire/transfer date

Preferred:

  • Master’s Degree in Nursing or health related filed
  • Certification in Emergency Nursing (CEN) and/or Critical Care (CCRN)
  • TNCC Instructor Certification
  • Experience in collective, coding and scoring trauma records and maintaining the Trauma Registry
  • Minimum two years in leadership/management role
  • Six (6) months experience in coordinating process and performance improvement activities
