Automotive Controller - McDonald Automotive

McDonald Automotive is a family-owned company proudly serving Colorado since 1965. With 9 automotive brands across 13 rooftops, our centralized accounting team operates from our Volkswagen store on Broadway Avenue in Littleton—where we’ve been for over 65 years! From this location, the team provides consistent financial and administrative support to every dealership in the group. Their collaborative approach and commitment to excellence help ensure smooth operations and a unified standard across the entire organization. We are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic automotive controller to join our team.

Compensation - $120,000 - $160,000

Experience & Qualifications Needed:

• 3 to 5 years of Automotive Controller or similar level experience is required.
• A bachelor’s degree in accounting or similar field, or equivalent experience is required.
• Active CPA license is highly desirable.
• Must have a proven track record leading and managing a large team.
• Familiarity with Federal, State, and franchise laws surrounding the automotive industry.

Essential Duties and Major Responsibilities:

• Consistently demonstrating the leadership qualities required to nurture a positive culture with exceptional employee satisfaction.
• Maintaining all processing time standards by training, coaching, problem solving, and implementing disciplinary actions as needed.
• Planning and maintaining fiscal records, month-end reports, and preparing financial reports that summarize and forecast company business activity and financial position in income, expenses, and earnings, based on past, present, and expected operations.
• Monthly and quarterly analytical review of both the financial operations of individual stores and the consolidated financial results of the Company.
• Documenting, monitoring, maintaining and implementing internal controls, as needed.
• Involvement in and overseeing the general ledger entry preparation and review, account reconciliation reviews, and month-end close process, including analyzing and reporting the results to the accounting department and Company leadership.
• Coordinates and assists with all tax reporting and updates with outside tax accountants.
• Supports the direction of financial planning and procurement.
• Assist in managing month-end close reporting, financials, timeline, and overall process with other accounting managers.
• Prepares and submits monthly sales tax returns.
• Assists with the annual audit, tax returns, and other compliance tasks.
• Performs backup duties in multiple areas when another accounting staff is out of the office.
• Assists the leadership team in identifying and mitigating organizational risk.
• Assists with other duties as assigned.

Specialized Skills:

• Proven ability to apply broad conceptual judgment and initiative to deal with complex accounting issues.
• Strong understanding of GL and bank reconciliations and payroll processing.
• Self-motivated and aptitude for meeting deadlines.
• Highly analytical, with strong problem-solving ability.
• Proficiency in computer systems such as Microsoft Office (particularly Excel), with the ability to learn new systems as needed.
• Excellent understanding of written and verbal communication.
• Ability to logically identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to complex problems and implement productive and cost-effective solutions.
• Excellent persuasion and diplomacy skills.
