What are the responsibilities and job description for the Roadway Testing Technician-Assistant Project Manager position at MC Squared, LLC?
The Roadway Testing Technician (RTT) performs field testing, inspection, and documentation of construction materials and roadway construction activities on federal and state funded transportation and infrastructure projects. The individual ensures compliance with GDOT Standard Specifications, ASTM standards, and project quality control requirements. This position involves working directly on active construction sites performing soil, asphalt, and concrete testing while communicating results to project engineers, contractors, owners, and GDOT representatives.
In addition to field responsibilities, the RTT will assist the Construction Services Project Manager with some project work.
Key Responsibilities
Materials Testing
Under the supervision of MC Squared’s Project Manager, the RTT is expected to assist with the following project tasks:

Our clients include DOTs, municipalities, state agencies, and large multi-national engineering firms. We are retained to provide innovative solutions to complex subsurface issues to support the design of heavy civil infrastructure projects in Transportation, Water/Wastewater, Tunneling, Dams, and Aviation sectors, as well as provide cost-effective solutions for structures, commercial developments, and educational institutions.
In addition to field responsibilities, the RTT will assist the Construction Services Project Manager with some project work.
Key Responsibilities
Materials Testing
- Perform field density testing of soils and aggregates using nuclear density gauges in accordance with GDOT and ASTM standards.
- Conduct concrete field-testing including slump, air content, temperature, and casting cylinders for compressive strength testing.
- Perform asphalt testing and inspection including temperature monitoring and sampling when required.
- Collect soil, aggregate, asphalt, and concrete samples for laboratory testing.
- Inspect subgrade preparation, compaction, and proof rolling activities.
- Observe roadway base installation, grading, and paving operations.
- Verify compliance with GDOT Standard Specifications.
- Inspect reinforcement placement, footings, and structural concrete operations when applicable.
- Complete GDOT-required field reports and test documentation.
- Maintain accurate daily field logs, inspection reports, and test results.
- Communicate testing results to project managers, contractors, owners, and GDOT personnel.
- Identify and report non-conforming materials or construction practices.
- Follow GDOT safety requirements and company safety policies.
- Properly handle, store, and transport nuclear density gauges in compliance with radiation safety standards.
- Ensure testing equipment is properly calibrated and maintained.
Under the supervision of MC Squared’s Project Manager, the RTT is expected to assist with the following project tasks:
- Assist with the review and submission of daily reports
- Attend and assist with running all project meetings
- Assist with the development of project cost proposals
- Assist with the maintenance of federal and state project documentation
- Assist with the review of contractors’ pay applications
- GDOT Roadway Testing Technician (RTT) Certification
- 2 years of construction materials testing or inspection experience
- Ability to travel to job sites across the CSRA (Central Savannah River Area) and East Georgia, with occasional travel to other regions as project needs dictate
- Knowledge of GDOT specifications, ASTM testing procedures, and roadway construction practices
- Ability to read construction drawings and GDOT plans
- Valid driver’s license with clean driving record
- High School Diploma or GED
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. (test equipment and samples), stand for an extended period, and work outdoors in varying weather conditions (heat, rain, etc.)
- ACI Field Testing Technician Level I
- GDOT Concrete Certification
- Knowledge of Procore construction management software
- NICET or ICC certifications (materials testing or inspection)
- Nuclear density gauge safety certification
- Familiarity with SCDOT (South Carolina Department of Transportation) standards and certifications is a plus, given our proximity to South Carolina projects
- Associate degree in Civil Engineering Technology
