Position Summary
The Mammogram Technician is responsible for performing diagnostic mammography procedures to assist in the detection and diagnosis of breast diseases. This position involves direct patient interaction, operation of imaging equipment, and adherence to strict safety and quality protocols. The technician ensures patient comfort, explains procedures, and supports patients throughout the imaging process. Duties must be performed in accordance with Medical Associates Plus’s policies, applicable laws, and professional standards of care.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Perform screening and diagnostic mammograms in accordance with provider or radiologist orders, radiology protocols, and safety guidelines.
- Demonstrate proficiency in selecting appropriate positioning, imaging techniques, and technical factors to capture high-quality mammographic images.
- Operate mammography equipment and ensure accurate, consistent imaging while maintaining patient safety and comfort.
- Perform routine and special view mammograms under the direction of a radiologist.
- Ensure proper compression and positioning based on clinical indications and patient anatomy.
- Review prior mammograms for comparison and identify the need for additional images or external film retrieval.
- Consult with radiologists and/or referring providers regarding screening vs. diagnostic exams.
- Verify each exam in the imaging system and ensure transmission to appropriate systems for interpretation and storage.
- Maintain all necessary certifications, including ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists), CPR, and State of Georgia Radiologic Technologist licensure.
- Maintain cleanliness and functionality of mammography equipment; report any malfunctions promptly.
- Follow all infection prevention and control protocols and safety procedures.
- Provide compassionate and professional care to all patients, always ensuring patient dignity and privacy.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Breast Center Manager or clinical leadership.
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Proficiency in digital mammography equipment and techniques.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to follow radiology procedures and adhere to regulatory standards.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks while maintaining a calm and supportive environment for patients.
- Knowledge of anatomy, positioning, radiographic techniques, and radiation safety.
Education
- Current ARRT certification in Radiologic Technology with a Mammography (M) designation.
- Current State of Georgia Radiologic Technologist license.
- Current CPR certification.
Experience
- At least one year of experience in mammography is preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to perform high-quality mammographic exams and interact compassionately with patients.
- Experience working with adult and geriatric patient populations.
- Familiarity with PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) and digital imaging platforms.
- Ability to handle sensitive situations with professionalism, empathy, and discretion.
Working Conditions
- Work is primarily performed in a clinical environment with routine exposure to imaging equipment and radiation safety practices.
- Must be able to stand for extended periods and assist patients with mobility limitations.
- May require lifting, positioning, or transporting patients and imaging equipment (up to 30 pounds).
- Must follow universal precautions and infection control procedures.
- Occasional evening or weekend shifts may be required based on clinical needs.
