Department: Collections/Billings Overall Purpose of the Position:
The Billing/Collection representative is responsible for the patient collections process. This includes collecting payments, establishing budgets with patients, patient’s outstanding balance follow-up, corresponding with insurance companies, verifying insurance eligibility, and following up on status of payment with patient/guarantor, insurance companies and/or adjustors.
Major Job Responsibilities: Percentage: 1. Always in a professional manner, contacts patients to follow up on past due accounts following MMG collection guidelines.
Minimum Qualifications: Education/Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent. One year of physician billing and collections, Medical insurance administration, or related experience.
Skills/Knowledge
Possesses effective organization, and math skills, must be able to prioritize and manage multiple tasks at the same time. Possesses effective, courteous and professional telephone skills.
Desired/Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of medical terminology, course work in business office administration.
Equipment Use
Personal computer, telephone, 10-key, copier and fax machine.
Characteristics
Must be willing to effectively participate as a team member with the entire Maui Medical Group staff, must be committed to the protection of confidential information, records, and/or reports. Must have the ability to communicate effectively in a professional and courteous manner.
Environmental Factors
Requires prolonged sitting (75%), bending, stooping and stretching for files and supplies (10%). Requires manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard and other office equipment. Vision must be correctable to 20/20 and hearing must be in the normal range for telephone contacts.
Hourly Rate
Starting @ $18.45; based on experience

- Works to secure payment from patient for outstanding amounts
- Where appropriate, works with patient to create a budget or payment plan
- Answers patient inquiries regarding their account
- Works to reduce assigned accounts receivable in accordance with MMG billing guidelines
- Issues appeals with insurance companies
- Correspond with insurance companies and adjustors (verbally and/or in writing) to verify status of claim
