Job Summary
An individual occupying this position is responsible for providing direction to firefighters and subordinate fire officers at a supervisory level in areas of fire suppression, fire training, apparatus/equipment readiness, safety, and facility operations and cleanliness.

Minimum Requirements
Minimum: One (1) year of service in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough Fire Service area. Three (3) years fire service experience. Two (2) years experience as a Fire Service officer. Completion of State of Alaska Firefighter II Certification within 2 years of hire. Leadership experience, administrative or organizational experience, may include delegating tasks, decision making and mentorship.
Firefighter I Certification.
Alaska Fire Instructor I Certification within two years of hire
Apparatus Engineer Certification.
Completion of Incident Command System (ICS) courses, ICS 100 and IS 700 within ninety (90) days of hire, ICS 300 and ICS 400 within nine (9) months of hire, and ICS 200 and IS 800 within one (1) year of hire.
Blood Borne Pathogens and HazCom courses required prior to initial assignment or within ten days of hire, whichever comes first.
Current First-Aid and CPR certifications
Valid Alaska driver's license required with an acceptable driving record and criminal history.
Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen, background check and physical.
Duties/Responsibilities
Develops initial strategic plan and fireground organizational framework when first on-scene fire officer. Ensures the effective transfer of Command as situations require.
Functions as a tactical supervisor and/or crew leader as required during fireground operations. Follows orders and directions of ranking officers and supervisors during emergency and non-emergency situations.
Directs the operation of hose lines, fire streams, and other equipment related to fire suppression, ensuring the safe and efficient functioning of all personnel and units.
Ensures compliance with department and/or borough Standard Operating Procedures.
Ensures apparatus/equipment is properly cared for, fully operational, cleaned, and returned to service after emergency operations or training exercises.
Performs follow-up on maintenance repair requests for apparatus/equipment.
Ensures that personnel protective equipment (e.g., turnouts, SCBA) is fully functional and safe.
Participates and assists in the development and delivery of training exercises and programs. Recognizes operational and training needs, and recommends methods to address such needs.
Properly reviews, completes, and files reports such as ANFIRS, run reports, training and attendance records, property damage and injury reports, maintenance repair requests, and other reports that may be required by the department and/or borough.
Provides supervision, leadership, and direction to subordinate officers, firefighters and engineers including but not limited to coaching/mentoring, progressive discipline, investigation and documentation, work and station duty assignments, on-scene firefighter supervision, and other delegated supervisory responsibilities, as required.
Effectively interfaces with other emergency services personnel and organizations.
On-call emergency responders for the Mat-Su Borough do not receive a benefits package. Following is brief description of the benefit(s) provided/available to this class of employee.
Alaska Supplemental Benefits System
The Supplemental Benefits System (SBS) is in lieu of Social Security and is mandatory. An employee contributes at 6.13% of gross wages, matched by the Borough (6.13%), on the present wage base of $176,100.

I understand that the schedule for this position will be limited to less than 30 hours per week and 1,500 hours per 12 month period. I further understand this is an on-call responder position that receives no benefits and no guarantee of hours.
