What are the responsibilities and job description for the Military Law Attorney position at Maryland Appellate Litigation?
Job Overview:
Seeking a skilled military-law attorney with a strong commitment to justice. This part-time position is particularly well suited for a veteran attorney with experience serving as a Judge Advocate (JAG) or handling matters involving the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA). The ideal candidate will possess exceptional legal research and writing skills, advise lead counsel on SCRA-related issues, and assist with correspondence, liaison, and collaboration throughout the representation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Advise lead counsel on SCRA issues arising during appellate proceedings.
- Conduct focused research on the SCRA, military law, and related federal and state authorities.
- Draft or review appellate briefs, motions, memoranda addressing SCRA issues.
- Serve as a liaison to military-law specialists and veterans’ organizations.
- Coordinate outreach to potential amici curiae to obtain appropriate amicus support.
- Assist with SCRA-related correspondence, case coordination, and strategic consultation throughout the appeal.
Requirements:
- Admission to practice in MD is preferred, but not required.
- Experience handling appeals before state or federal appellate courts.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Strong analytical, research, and problem-solving abilities.
- Experience with military law is a plus.
Compensation:
- Compensation is $30 per hour for all authorized work performed. If the appeal results in a favorable outcome, the SCRA awards attorney’s fees, and the attorney’s compensation will be adjusted to his or her standard hourly rate up to $350.
- This is a limited-scope consulting position, and the work may be performed remotely. Interested attorneys should submit a résumé, a brief description of relevant experience, and their availability.
