What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanical Engineer I / Mechanical Engineer II position at MARTAC?
Overview
MARTAC is seeking Mechanical Engineers to join a multidisciplinary team developing next-generation, high-performance Unmanned Surface Vessels (USVs). This is a hands-on mechanical design role covering machinery integration, structures, fluid systems, and system-level layout. The position is responsible for the design, modeling, and documentation of vessel mechanical systems, and for the manufacturability of the drawings and Bills of Material released to Production. Design cycles are short, so the position carries direct responsibility for supporting the build and incorporating test findings into subsequent revisions.
This requisition is posted at two levels. Candidates are placed based on demonstrated experience and design ownership, not solely years of service:
- Mechanical Engineer I (0–2 years). Owns components and subassemblies under regular design guidance, with drawings reviewed and approved by senior engineering.
- Mechanical Engineer II (2–5 years). Owns defined subsystems from concept through production support, with independent responsibility for layout, component selection, and build documentation.
Responsibilities
- Design and integrate mechanical systems and structures for autonomous surface vessel platforms, including system layout and machinery arrangement, at a scope of ownership appropriate to level.
- Design composite structural elements, supports, mounts, and foundations.
- Select and integrate sub-system components, and lay out fluid systems and piping, including pumps, valves, fittings, and filtration.
- Design and integrate mounting for external payloads and sensors, including sealing, alignment, and load paths.
- Design electronics rack structures and mounting provisions for electrical components and enclosures.
- Develop detailed 3D CAD models and fabrication drawings using SOLIDWORKS, in accordance with company drawing standards and part numbering conventions.
- Create accurate Bills of Material, assembly drawings, and work instructions, and release them through the engineering change and revision control process.
- Support production teams directly on the floor by resolving engineering questions, dispositioning fit and interference issues, and providing technical guidance during vessel construction.
- Support on-water and bench testing and incorporate findings into subsequent design revisions.
- Coordinate mechanical interfaces with Electrical Engineering, Software, and payload stakeholders, and escalate unresolved conflicts.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture, Marine or Ocean Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Mechanical Engineer I: 0–2 years of engineering experience; internships, co-ops, capstone hardware, and competition team work are considered qualifying. Mechanical Engineer II: 2–5 years of relevant mechanical design experience, including ownership of released designs.
- Working proficiency with 3D CAD. SOLIDWORKS is preferred; Creo, NX, CATIA, Inventor, or Fusion experience is considered transferable.
- Familiarity with engineering drawing practice, dimensioning and tolerancing, and GD&T, demonstrated through coursework, project work, or professional experience.
- Demonstrated hands-on fabrication or build experience, such as Formula SAE, Baja SAE, robotics competition, capstone hardware, or machine shop work.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and assembly structure, and an understanding of revision control and formal engineering change processes.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and shifting priorities under compressed schedules, and to work effectively within cross-functional teams.
- U.S. citizenship.
- Must be able to pass a background check and drug test.
Preferred Qualifications
- Coursework, project, or professional experience with boats, marine systems, or boat construction methods, including machinery arrangements and fluid system piping.
- Familiarity with maritime and boat construction standards, such as ABYC, DNV, or ISO.
- Composite structural design experience, including hands-on layup and lamination schedule development.
- Structural analysis using FEA tools such as SOLIDWORKS Simulation, ANSYS, or Abaqus.
- Coursework or working knowledge of planning hull hydrodynamics, or exposure to CFD tools.
- Familiarity with the mechanical aspects of wire harness routing, connector selection, and electrical enclosure design.
- Experience with unmanned vessels, marine robotics, or other unmanned systems such as UAV or UGV platforms.
- Hands-on shop skills, including machining, welding, fabrication, or composite layup.
- SOLIDWORKS certification such as CSWA or CSWP, or experience with SOLIDWORKS PDM or a comparable product data management system.
- Experience in the aerospace, defense, maritime, or other controlled manufacturing environment, including Department of Defense or Foreign Military Sales programs.
