What are the responsibilities and job description for the CAD Administrator / PDM Engineer – Solidworks position at MARTAC?
Job Summary
MARTAC is seeking a PDM/PLM Administrator to own the product data management system supporting our unmanned maritime systems programs.
The PDM/PLM Administrator is responsible for the configuration, operation, and day-to-day administration of the SOLIDWORKS PDM environment, and for the accuracy of engineering Bills of Material released from PDM to the ERP system. This position works closely with Engineering, Production, Quality, Supply Chain, Configuration Management, and Information Technology to ensure that CAD data, drawings, and BOMs are controlled, current, and consistent across systems. The position supports vault administration, CAD data standards, BOM release and reconciliation, part numbering, engineering change implementation, and user training for developmental and production programs.
Responsibilities
- Serve as system administrator for SOLIDWORKS PDM, from implementation through steady-state operation.
- Configure and maintain the vault, including folder structure, data cards, file naming, search configuration, and supported file types.
- Build and maintain approval workflows, revision schemes, and state transitions that reflect the engineering release process.
- Administer users, groups, and permissions, and remove access promptly when personnel change roles or depart.
- Coordinate with Information Technology on backups, restore testing, archive and replication, licensing, client installation, and version upgrades of PDM and its SolidWorks integration.
- Plan and execute migration of legacy CAD and drawing files into the vault, resolving duplicates, broken references, and orphaned files.
- Maintain SolidWorks templates, custom properties, design libraries, and standard hardware components; repair file references and resolve file conflicts.
- Troubleshoot PDM issues reported by users and escalate to the vendor or reseller as required.
- Maintain the accuracy of engineering Bills of Material as they move from CAD and PDM into the ERP system.
- Release and transfer BOM structures, part numbers, revisions, quantities, and units of measure to the ERP system.
- Reconcile engineering BOMs against ERP BOMs on a defined cadence and drive discrepancies to closure with Engineering, Production, and Supply Chain.
- Maintain item master data, including descriptions, make and buy designation, revision level, and lifecycle status.
- Maintain BOM effectivity through approved changes, including phase-in and phase-out of superseded parts and treatment of work in process.
- Capture structures not represented in CAD, including bulk items, finishes, consumables, unmodeled hardware, and reference items.
- Produce BOM and where-used reports for cost, quoting, procurement, and configuration review, and coordinate with the ERP system owner on integration configuration, field mapping, and failed data transfers.
- Administer the engineering change process within PDM and maintain revision control so that released models, drawings, and BOMs agree at all times.
- Administer the part numbering scheme and enforce it consistently across CAD, PDM, drawings, and the ERP system.
- Maintain the released drawing package, including PDF and STEP publishing, title and revision block accuracy, controlled distribution, and identification of obsolete and superseded parts.
- Maintain traceability records sufficient to support internal, customer, and quality audits, and control access to export-controlled technical data within the vault.
- Develop work instructions and train engineers, designers, technicians, and non-CAD users on check-in and check-out discipline, revision practice, and retrieval of released data.
- Provide data support to Production, Supply Chain, Quality, and Program Management, including part status and revision level inquiries.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree and 2 years of relevant experience; additional relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- Three or more years of hands-on experience with a PDM or PLM system in a product development or manufacturing environment.
- Experience as a PDM administrator or power user, including vault structure, workflows, revision states, permissions, and data cards.
- Working knowledge of SolidWorks, including file references, configurations, and custom properties.
- Experience creating or maintaining Bills of Material and transferring BOM data to an ERP or MRP system.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and assembly structure, and an understanding of revision control and formal engineering change processes.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and SharePoint.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate effectively with Engineering, Production, Quality, Supply Chain, and Program Management.
- Must be a U.S. Person as defined under applicable export control regulations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Administrator-level experience with SOLIDWORKS PDM Professional.
- Experience leading a PDM implementation, data migration, or major version upgrade.
- Experience configuring or supporting a PDM to ERP integration, including field mapping and error handling.
- Experience with JAMIS, Windchill, Teamcenter, Agile PLM, or similar business systems.
- SQL proficiency, or experience with PDM add-ins, macros, task automation, or API development.
- SOLIDWORKS certification such as CSWA or CSWP, or a PDM administration certification.
- Familiarity with ISO 9001 and/or AS9100 requirements.
- Experience in the aerospace, defense, maritime, or other controlled manufacturing environment, including Department of Defense, U.S. Government, or Foreign Military Sales programs.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance, if required by program.
