SUMMARY:
The elementary teacher is responsible for the instruction of students assigned to his/her classroom and general supervision of all students. The teacher’s role is to create a flexible elementary grade program and class environment favorable to learning and personal growth; to establish effective rapport with students; to motivate students to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for elementary education, in accordance with each student’s ability; and to establish good relationships with parents and with other staff members.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum of a Bachelor's degree or higher
- Valid Michigan elementary teaching certificate
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Teach district approved curriculum
- Plan and provide for the general instruction within the four core academic areas including reading, spelling, language, social studies, mathematics, and science to students in a classroom, utilizing courses of study and / or grade level expectations adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities
- Develop lesson plans and instructional materials and provide individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt curriculum to the individual needs of each student
- Translate lesson plans into developmentally appropriate learning experiences
- Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom
- Evaluate students’ academic and social growth, keep appropriate records, and prepare progress reports
- Communicate regularly with parents outside normal classroom day by means of newsletters, notes, phone calls, email, conferences, etc.
- Identify student needs and make appropriate referrals and develop strategies for individual education plans
- Create an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, interest centers and exhibits of student work
- Plan and coordinate the work of paraprofessionals, parents and volunteers in the classroom and on field trips
- Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and/or self-selected professional growth activities
- Maintain discipline in and out of the classroom
- Administer group standardized tests in accordance with the district testing program
- Participate in curriculum development programs and in faculty committees
- Read and be familiar with the School Student Handbook and Policy Manual of Marshall Public Schools. Strict compliance with all rules, regulations and policies is required.
- Meet all contractual obligations as outlined in the Marshall Teachers’ Association Master Agreement
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers, and parents
- Perform other related duties that may be assigned by the building principal

Per Marshall Teachers Association Contract (BA or MA)
