SUMMARY:
The Science teacher is responsible for the planning instruction and/or adoption of the education program to enable students to benefit from educational experiences. The teacher’s role is to develop in each student an awareness of the role of science; to motivate each student to acquire knowledge of scientific facts and principles; to develop skills in scientific methods of problem solving; and to discover and develop special talents of students in scientific fields.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum of a Bachelor's degree or higher
- Valid Michigan elementary or secondary teaching certificate
- Endorsement in Science (DX) or Integrated Science (DI)
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Build trust and confidence with students
- Teach district approved curriculum
- Meet and plan regularly as part of the interdisciplinary teaching team for the use of academic time, the social / emotional environment and scheduling of students
- Teach skills, knowledge and scientific attitudes through courses of specific science content area as assigned to students, utilizing courses of study and course/grade level expectations adopted by the Board of Education
- Plan a science program involving demonstrations, lectures, discussions and student experiments; organize laboratory activities for optimum learning
- Demonstrate scientific concepts by use of scientific apparatus, experiments and standard or teacher-prepared charts, sketches and other instructional aids
- Develop lesson plans, instructional materials and provide individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of students
- Instruct students in proper use, care and safe handling of chemicals, science equipment and/or plant and animal life
- Provide for safe storage and proper use of materials, equipment and tools; make minor adjustments and request repairs to equipment as required
- Establish and maintain standards of student behavior to provide an orderly and productive classroom environment
- Evaluate student progress in scientific knowledge and skills; report progress on appropriate minimal skill and team reporting forms
- Assist in the selection and requisition of books, instructional aids, science equipment, chemicals, supplies and maintain required inventory records
- Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and/or self-selected professional growth activities
- Communicate with parents through conferences and other means to discuss student progress and to interpret the school program
- Participate in curriculum development programs and in faculty committees
- Maintain discipline in and out of the classroom
- Read and be familiar with the School Student Handbook and Policy Manual of Marshall Public Schools; strict compliance with all rules, regulations and policies is required
- Meet all contractual obligations as outlined in the Marshall Teachers’ Association Master Agreement
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers, and parents
- Perform other related duties that may be assigned by the building principal

Per Marshall Teachers Association Contract (BA or MA)
