The Central Sterilization Technician performs effective and efficient customer service by maintaining quality and aseptic control procedures including decontamination, processing, inspection, assembly, packaging, sterilization, storage and distribution of sterile instruments, equipment and supplies. This is a part-time position with a schedule of 30 hours per week, Monday-Friday.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Central Sterilization Technician performs effective and efficient customer service by maintaining quality and aseptic control procedures including decontamination, processing, inspection, assembly, packaging, sterilization, storage and distribution of sterile instruments, equipment and supplies. This is a part-time position with a schedule of 30 hours per week, Monday-Friday.
1. Appropriately prepares all dental instrumentation and handpieces for manual or mechanical decontamination to ensure items are not damaged during processing.
2. Appropriately selects/uses correct cleaning method (manual or mechanical) and cleaning chemicals required for each item. Accurately loads/unloads and operates washers, sonic cleaners and cart washer to ensure items are clean and safe for handling. Verifies correct cycle parameters. Recognizes faulty equipment operations and refers to Supervisor, Lead or Director.
3. Accurately identifies, inspects and assembles dental instrumentation and handpieces for all clinic areas to ensure availability and safe and efficient operation during patient care procedures. Recognizes nonfunctional equipment or general instrumentation and refers issues to Supervisor, Lead, or Director. (Inspection/Assembly).
4. Appropriately selects and uses correct type and method of packaging for dental instrumentation, equipment and supplies to prevent potential damage and assist in proper sterilant penetration.
5. Completely operates all sterilization equipment and completes required documentation. Monitors and verifies mechanical, chemical and biological indicators to ensure sterilization parameters have been achieved. Performs recall if parameters are not met.
6. Efficiently selects instrumentation, equipment and supplies and prepares and delivers case carts to ensure all items have integrity and are readily available for patient care. Collects lab coats and towels from the clinic and office areas and prepare them for linen pick-up. Sort unusable gowns for replacement.
7. Routinely updates knowledge on processing practices, procedures and products. If certified, maintains certification.
8. Consistently verifies accuracy of all tasks performed and participates in process improvement efforts to increase customer satisfaction.
9. Participates in projects or groups assigned by Supervisor or Director.
10. Attends required meetings and activities at the Dental School or University.
11. Actively supports and participates in orientation of new employees.
Must have flexible schedule because occasionally work hours may change due to departmental need, student testing and weekend exams.

One to three years of experience
Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of microbiology, decontamination, and sterilization and infection control
Knowledge of instrument tracking systems
