PARAPROFESSIONAL

Multiple positions available - Elementary and Secondary

REPORTS TO: Building Principal (s)

RATIONALE: Under the guidance of the special education teacher, case manager, and/or consultant, assist in providing for the individual needs of special education students as outlined in their individual educational programs.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school graduate (or equivalent) and some college preparation preferred.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality.
  • Ability to lift students as necessary, and assist with their personal needs (feeding, bathroom, physical, support equipment, etc.).
  • Willing and able to become certified in Handle with Care (HWC) training; crisis prevention and intervention or equivalent.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Background or experience in working with, coaching, tutoring, or mentoring at-risk or special education students.
  • Effective communication skills (usage, grammar, and vocabulary) both oral and written.
  • Basic computer skills required and willingness to learn additional software if needed.
  • Willingness to be trained in instructional and/or behavioral strategies.
  • High energy level, creative problem-solving ability, and sensitivity to the needs of students.
  • Ability to work with and relate to students positively and with enthusiasm.
  • Ability to show initiative to follow through on activities without continuous teacher direction.
  • Ability to model and facilitate children's learning activities to help them achieve goals stated by their individual educational programs.
  • Ability to model teacher's positive reinforcement techniques.
  • Genuine interest in and aptitude for working with children with learning, emotional, and/or physical disabilities.
  • Alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work with individual special education students or small groups of special education students to assist them in mastering skills as directed by the special education teacher, case manager, or consultant in a resources room, general education classroom, or other designated area.
  • Assist special education staff and classroom teachers in collecting student data required for the progress monitoring of goals as outlined in the students’ individual educational program.
  • Assist special education students to attain concepts and skills through the use of manipulatives, alternative strategies, and adaptive techniques.
  • Assist special education students with regular classroom assignments, skills, taking notes, preparing written reports or projects, comprehending content area reading, handwriting, studying for tests, test accommodations, etc… as outlined in the students’ individual education program.
  • Maintain communication between the special education teacher, service providers, and general education classroom teachers regarding student progress, concerns, needs, or other pertinent information.
  • Assist teachers in implementing positive reinforcement plans, behavior intervention plans, emergency intervention plans, safety plans, and/or medical action plans as applicable.
  • Assist special education students in using appropriate self-regulation strategies when they are exhibiting unsafe behaviors.
  • Assist the building SAFE Team in performing crisis intervention, de-escalation, and restraint procedures as needed.
  • Assist staff with record keeping and/or medicaid billing for personal care services of special education students.
  • Assist special education students in operating technology and equipment used for instructional or communicative purposes.
  • Check and monitor progress of students on a daily basis and provide written reports to special education and classroom teachers as requested.
  • Assist with the personal needs of students (feeding, bathroom, physical, medical, equipment, etc.)
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal (s).

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $17.78 - $19.08 per hour
