Job Title: Lifeguard
Part-time
Lifeguard certification costs will be covered; however, must remain employed for a minimum of six months. If employment ends before then, the certification payment must be reimbursed.

POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Aquatics Coordinator, the Lifeguard is responsible for ensuring the safety of all participants and maintaining a safe, clean, and positive aquatic environment. This position supports the YMCA’s mission of strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility by providing vigilant supervision of the pool area, preventing accidents, and responding quickly and effectively to all emergencies.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
· Maintain constant and vigilant surveillance of the pool area to ensure the safety of all swimmers and prevent accidents.
· Understand and follow all emergency procedures, responding immediately and appropriately to any emergency in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Complete all required incident and accident reports accurately and promptly.
· Build and maintain positive relationships with members, participants, and staff, providing excellent customer service and promoting a welcoming and inclusive environment.
· Consistently enforce and model safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic areas, ensuring a safe and respectful atmosphere for all. Document and report all significant behaviors, incidents, and disciplinary actions in accordance with YMCA behavior management procedures.
· Conduct routine safety and equipment checks, ensuring that all lifesaving and pool equipment is in good working condition and readily available.
· Inspect the pool and surrounding area for hazards upon arrival and throughout each shift, taking appropriate action to correct unsafe conditions.
· Perform cleaning duties as assigned to maintain a clean, safe, and organized pool deck and facility.
· Perform chemical testing at designated times throughout the day, record results accurately, and take corrective action as needed to maintain water quality standards.
· Maintain accurate records as required by the YMCA, local health department, and regulatory agencies.
· Participate in all staff meetings, in-service training courses, and required certifications to maintain current skills and ensure readiness to respond to any situation.
QUALIFICATIONS
· Must hold current certifications in Lifeguarding, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, and Basic First Aid.
· Must be at least 16 years of age; prior lifeguard experience in a community, recreation, or YMCA setting is preferred.
· Current YMCA Lifeguard or American Red Cross Lifeguard certification required.
KNOWLEDGE EXPERIENCE
Must have the ability to demonstrate and/or show competence in the following areas:
· Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
· Demonstrated ability to remain alert, attentive, and make sound decisions in high-pressure or emergency situations.
· Strong understanding of water safety principles, rescue techniques, and emergency response protocols.
· Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with members, participants, and coworkers of all ages and backgrounds.
· Commitment to upholding YMCA core values and fostering a safe, inclusive, and positive environment.
· Comfortable using basic technology tools for attendance tracking, communication, and reporting.
